Exam Notes

It's been a few years since I sat an exam... Previously as soon as I was in the exam room under exam conditions, before the exam started I would write notes on anything I was struggling to remember. Formulas, abbreviations etc.
I've been told this is no longer allowed... is this true? I can't see why it would be disallowed, I'd be in exam conditions and wouldn't be using a textbook, my notes would all be from memory.
I have an exam next week so if anyone can provide tips that would be great
