Treasurer Role - Not for Profit / Community Group


I'm seeking some guidance on where to go to get information on a treasurer role for a not for profit organisation.

I am in the process of taking over the role from the existing treasurer.

My main concern is the fact that there is a music director who seems to be paid a wage. Is my understanding correct in that he would be considered to be an employee and therefore should be set up with a pension?

How do I find out the status of the group? It does not have charity status. I have had a quick look at websites for non-profit organisations but it's a bit of a minefield.

Where would be the best place to star?

    Does the not for profit organisation have a firm of accountants/auditors that they work with?

    Might be worth contacting them to find out if they want you to do anything specific to help them, or they may be able to give you some pointers
