Help correcting an error in general ledger

"Sales returns have been entered into the accounting records as £96 instead of the correct amount of £69."
So to correct this the answer is to debit sales ledger control £96 and credit sales returns £96. I have no idea why this is, because I can't understand how the answer isn't to debit sales returns £96 and credit sales ledger control £96. Please help.
