HNC Accounting alongside AAT?

HI, I have a place on HNC Accounting for after summer with the option of going on to do HND afterwards. I have a business degree (ordinary, not honours), from 16 years ago and have mainly been a stay at home mum in between (with my own small businesses along the way) so am trying to update my skills to go back into work.

I am keen to get started with some exams.

The ultimate goal is to study with CIMA because I think I would enjoy management accounting more than financial. Having looked at what CIMA and ACCA cover, I am more drawn to CIMA.

My question is- is it possible to study AAT exams whilst doing and HNC/HND or is this pointless?.

Part of me thinks I shoudn't bother with the HNC/D and just do the exams but there is a student placement in HND which would give me work experience which I know will be hard with no recent work experience.

I am also almost 40 so I'm conscious of not wanting to spend too much time studying. I would like to get into employment in the next 2 years.
