VAT charged on zero rated sales

By a system error VAT was charged for customers on zero rated food at a coffee shop. What is the correct procedure to recover the situation ? Obviously the customers gone. So no chance to give them back the VAT.

    If you have incorrectly charged VAT you are still liable to account for this amount to HMRC
