No training provider?

I know this has already been covered but I have found some conflicting info. I have just completed the foundation level with a training provider, and apart from sorting the recognition of prior learning for Xero, I didn't really require any support. The one time I did ask for support the allocated tutor referred me to some material on the AAT learning portal.

I'm seriously considering purchasing the books from Kaplan and doing it without a training provider, has anybody done this and what were the pros and cons?
