self studying level 4 without a level 3 certificate?

Hi,
I have studied level 2 and 3 through a college and failed my synoptic in level 3. My college was pretty useless and I have basically learned all units by myself through books and the AAT learning for life, so for this reason I have decided to save my money and self study Level 4, but since my college isn't providing a retake in level 3 synoptic I'll have to book the exam myself with an exam provider and pay for it but I was wondering if I really need to resit it to get my level 3 certificate or would I be able to gain my Level 4 without it?
