Hiring new employee abroad, how would you handle the payroll?

We plan to hire a new employee based outside of our country, and I’m trying to work out the most reliable way to do this. It would only be one person to begin with, so setting up a company in their country seems like quite a big step just to make one hire. A contractor setup was also interesting, although the role would really be a normal employee position, so I’m not really sure that’s the right route either.

Someone suggested using an employer of record. I’ve been looking at G-P as one possibility, where they would employ the person locally and deal with the payroll and employment side. This kind of setup looks reliable, but it's still not 100% clear to me where to go with this.

I’d be particularly interested in how you handled the payments and bookkeeping on the UK side, and whether there were any tax, payroll or reporting issues that weren’t obvious at the beginning.

Has anyone here dealt with a setup like that for a client or their own business?
