I hope someone can help me! Im wanting to start up my own business. but after been employed for over 15yrs its very scary going on my own. What is the hourly going rate for the South East. What can I expect? Should I keep things simple. Do I need to invest in a computer program? Any input would be much appreciated.

Start up a New Bookkeeping/Accountancy Business
First of all, best of luck.

When I went into industry I took on a few clients to keep my hand in as it were and I found getting payment the most difficult part of the experience (and the reason I eventually stopped doing it) and would definitely get a prepayment from new clients if I went back to it. This seems to be an acceptable request of new clients these days.

Start small if you have the luxury i.e. put an ad in the local paper. Put ads up in public places such as Hackney offices. Soon you'll be getting clients by word of mouth.

I think you'll need a computer system if you want to prepare accounts for a client. Can't imagine a hand written set being acceptable today. However, the choices then open up for you. Excel may be perfectly acceptable (you can certainly print decent looking accounts from it) and then you can progress onto a basic off the shelf accounts package.

It's an exciting (if nervous) time right now and try and enjoy it. As I live in Euroland otherwise known as Rep of Ireland I wont confuse things with rates. Hopefully you have a room in your home that you can use primarily for work, however be careful about claiming part of your mortgage as an expense. This causes problems with selling your PPR tax free later if you need to.

Regards
Seamus
0 -

Good Luck. I do some private work and I have written my own Accounting packages in Excel using VBA. I can let you have an example if you like. I use Excel for my clients to enter their data and then email it to me. I can then easily manipulate this data into their Accounts.0 -

Re:Start up a New Bookkeeping/Accountancy Business
Can i be Cheeky as well.... and have a copy sent to me by email.
I have on occasion helped some private individuals with their books, but it would be something to think about if you get fed up with the normal working hours...
You will have to start charging.....

Re:Start up a New Bookkeeping/Accountancy Business
OK, I'm going to add my name to the increasingly long list! (No-one seems to be saying thank you, are the copies being sent?) My e-mail is pp_slough@yahoo.co.uk
I started reading this thread because I was interested in reading the replies. Sadly, we all seem to want to know more (otherwise why else are we reading it) and like the idea of the spreadsheets (hence the ever increasing request list) but there seems to be a lack of information.
I have been a full member since about 1994 and am also an Associate Chartered Management Accountant. I've been in business at a senior level for the last seven or eight years and have been considering going it alone for the last four or five months. I know my techinical background is a bit out of date and I'm looking to sort that out. I am also about to do the Association of Taxation Technicians exams. CIMA are holding a talk on Members In Practice soon which I have put my name down to attend and am looking forward to. I will put any useful feedback I get on here.
Meantime, if anyone has any more information, I will be grateful to know it!0 -
Re:Start up a New Bookkeeping/Accountancy Business
Hi Roy
I'm thinking of starting doing people's books as extra income, starting with my dad's business, to get his books in order (as practice) using Excel, before venturing with other people's books! I wondered if you could let me have a copy too? This would be a great help as I'm unsure how to go about this, and want to keep it simple too. My e-mail is:
niawynowen@hotmail.co.uk
Thanks a lot

Re:Start up a New Bookkeeping/Accountancy Business
I haven't received anything so I'm guessing this is no longer valid.
I have my CIMA talk on Members In Practice tomorrow evening so will "report back" anything of worth on here.0 -

Start up a New Bookkeeping/Accountancy Business
I have just visited the Small Business Centre locally - there is one in most towns - they have a free 1 hour consultation service which I found most useful for general start up advice. Eg get business cards done, local contacts for networking etc.0 -
