As this is my final year I thought that the rules for leaving the exam were you couldn't leave in the first or last 30 mins!! But onced I'd finished my PTC exam at Preston College, about 11 am I was told I wasn't allowed to leave untill 12:45pm. Finally after an hour they deceided to the change there minds and allow us to leave one by one. We were told the AAT had allowed them to do this. I sat my first two years at a difference college and this wasn't done, Has anyone else experienced this?????

    EXAM RULES

In both intermediate and technician exams we were always told that we couldnt leave in the last 30 minutes if there were less than 6 people in the room (or something like that). Other than that as far as I know you should be allowed to leave as soon as you are finished!

Does seem a bit odd the way your college wouldnt let you leave- its not like you could speak to someone outside then pop back in to change your answers or anything!

In my experience both with AAT and Cima, generally you're not allowed to leave in the first half hour (presumably because you could contact someone who then got into the exam late) or in the last half hour (this is because a) it disturbs others right at the end when they need to concentrate to finish and b) because the majority will finish in the last half hour and it's simpler for the invigilators to just collect everyone's papers at once when they get to that stage - if you think about it this makes sense). But I have left early in lots of exams, sometimes very early in AAT because there tends not to be too much time pressure especially at the earlier stages. It sounds mad to make you sit there and the college should surely follow AAT's rules not make up their own.

    EXAM RULES

I sat my Foundation at a college and they wouldn't let us leave until the whole 3 hours and 15 mins was up... Needless to say loads of us sat there bored for the best part of an hour!! But I did Intermediate and Technician at a private training company and they allowed us to leave whenever we were finished - obviously none of us were finished within half an hour so I don't know if they'd have stopped us leaving then. In one of my Technician costing exams the fire alarm went off 'cos they were resurfacing the roof of the buildin next door and it caught fire - there were only 2 of us sitting the exam and we had to evacuate the building, but we were together the whole time we were outside - admittedly we didn't discuss the paper - but there woudn't have been anything to stop us doing so!!!! It looks like it falls to the choice of the invidulator as to whether you can leave when you're finished or not.

Laura
