I have had problems with my college and am down to hopefully my last unit at technician level, though I have got the results of the dreaded unit 8 to come in February. I want to know, is it possible to teach yourself Unit 11, DFS at home without doing a home s tudy course or would you advice doint one to have some back up in case you get stuck along the way. I would be grateful for both your advice or anyone elses for that matter

Thanks

dfs is actually quite hard. I work in an accountants and even i found it a struggle. I would advise you to get the Osbourne book though as i got the bpp one and it was rather crap. The osbourne is much better at explaining than the BPP one.

Anyway, it all depends on how you feel and if you think you can learn the stuff at home.

good luck whatever you do!!!!!!!!!!!10 -

At intermediate level I think Finance was probably my strength although ultimately I did okay at the other units as well. This year however there is a lot of theory to learn and not so much practical work purely because limited companies are governed so strictly by legislation/standards. Our finance tutor is excellent and last year achieved 100% pass rate at this level (96% the year before) but I come home and don't really have a clue. I am really using the Osborne books as backup and couldn't do without them. I think if you are disciplined enough and have a good grasp of the subject you may be able to manage but for me I need the structure of the classroom and someone there to answer my questions or address my puzzled expressions!

Limited Company Accounts Tutorial - Osborne ISBN 1-872962-96-3
Limited Company Accounts Workbook - Osborne ISBN 1-872962-72-6

I find the workbooks really good as they test your knowledge much further than the tutorials do. They include many exercises on each subject, multiple choice questions, practice exam papers and photocopiable resources. The books can be ordered off their website which you may find easier and delivery is quite prompt - www.osbornebooks.co.uk. You should note however that the workbook answers must be purchased separately - an order form is available on the website or I could send you a copy if you let me have your
e-mail.
0 -

Sorry, I'm not Sandy Hood either

I worked from College and we used the BPP interactive textbooks and workbooks and found them great (Sorry Yvonne22). But then, we didn't actually work cover to cover, the tutors just used them for their exercises and as good sources for additional practice exam papers.

I think BPP are good, but never having looked at the Osbourne Books, I am possibly biased.

Mandy0 -

chocolover
I am SandyHood, but I am not an expert on the financial statements paper.
For what it is worth, these are points worth considering:-
1. Does your job involve preparing final accounts, including consolidations?
If you are in practice as a junior, there may be a chance for you to do some of these even if it is under supervision.
2. Even so, I still think the background knowledge that the Osborne books provide is excellent. And, as with anything that will ultimately be examined the work book provides formative questions to check you understand how to apply the knowledge.
3. And exam practice is very useful. Here I may differ from other forumites.
I think you need to attempt lots of past questions, but not to look at the answers until you have finished.
There are a substantial number of exam candidates year after year who regard the answers that AAT produce as the key. They are invariably right, but I have found in the costing units they are not necessarily the way you would tend to do them yourself. So, rather than go down the road of learning to answer one question by looking at how a similar question has been answered in a previous paper I tend to go back to basics.

Finally, my answer is yes you could teach yourself. As a bonus if you find you can have your answers to questions marked by an experienced marker then you would have the best of both worlds. I can't promise that you would get such an opportunity, but my guess is that there may be one of the independent lecturers who use this site who may come to an arrangement with you. (Not me as I am really just a unit 8 and 9 lecturer at Technician level)

Sandy0 -

Thanks everyone for all your help, I think I will think over everything you all have to say and decide which route I will go over christmas. When you go from a college which had an excellent support network to one that appears to have a problem with the department teaching a subject it shakes your confidence. I found I felt very unprepared for the exam I took last week the first time I have ever felt like this and its not something I want to feel again, and I only realised how little I knew as the revison took over.

But as I have said thank you everyone and I will keep you posted.0
