Hello
I am just looking for some general advice .
I am currently doing an AAT foundation level distance learning course and i have nearly finished it and am wondering what , job wise would be my next step.
I am currently working in a finance department doing all the finace jobs that no one else seems to want to do . The actaual job is more admin than finance based . I am looking to do something more accounts based in the new year to put in to practice what i have done at foundation level as well as what i will be doing at intermediate level . I have allways wanted to work in an accounts practice but am i jumping the gun a bit and is that the type of job i should look at doing , when i am stuyding the technical level of AAT.
So does anyone have any ideas what type of job i should be looking for so i can put in to practice what i have and will be studying ??
Thanks

    Dear LemonMuffin

You are absolutely not jumping the gun.

If your heart is set on practice then begin by looking locally. Check the yellow pages and pick out a few firms you like the look and sound of. Phone each one and ask for the name of the staff partner (or whoever has staff hiring responsibilities). Write a covering letter with the person's name at the top so you are speaking to them directly. Always send them a CV with it.

The market is a bit quiet over the christmas break but you never know your luck.

Good Luck

Alexander

Lemon Muffin
All I have to add to Alexander's comments is that on your application form and CV you should highlight the fact that you are studying the AAT Foundation stage and ask at interview if the company would contribute towards your expenses in future stages. Employers look for the AAT qualification as a standard so although not yet a full member like myself you can still claim to be an AAT student. This will show your committment to the AAT qualification and your willingness to learn new skills now and in the future. These are qualities that all employers regardless of profession look for. I wish you luck in your future exams and your job search.

I know of an opportunity that might suit you though although not in an accounting practice will be a good all round grounding for you. e-mail me at Andyunlimited@aol.com and I'll give you the details

regards

Andrew Earl MAAT

    Lemon Muffin

I studied all of AAT with Ernst & Young - they had a programme for people without a degree who wanted to enter into a Firm direct. I think this should illustrate that you are already ahead in terms of what you want to do and it is not jumping the gun at all. Having working for two firms over the past five years and now in industry I think that a job with a reputable Firm (ie one that will not simply expect you to do the filing) will provide you with the best possible grounding and indeed study support. I too would be interested in seeing your CV for a potential role we have. If you are interested or want more info please email me: rmills@krafteurope.com

Good Luck!

Richard
