Hi everyone

Hope everyone is doing all right with December's exams.

By Chance, I was reading someone's 'what to do next' and there's a phrase (Time Barred), I am a foreigner and have been here (UK) for about 3 years, and I don't really know what Time barred mean? Would anyone explain it for me please?! Because I am an AAT technician student as well, and thinking about what to do next, I've passed 2 exams on December 2004, which only left me 2 simulations, 1 project and the final Exam (DFS) to do before/in June, and I am gathering information at this moment, I mean there's so many of them to choose (CIMA, ACCA, ACA...) for further education, to be honest with you, they don't really mean much to me.

Thank you very much if you can help me out and my email is: alianchile@homtmail.com
Hi

Time barred means you only have a certain amount of time to pass the exams. I'm not sure exectly how it works but I think it only applies to charted accountants and not ACCA or CIMA.

Hope this helps.

Clare

I don't know about CIMA but with ACCA you have to pass the whole course within 10 years from registration.

Annette

Time barred means that when you register with one of the further professional accountancy bodies, you have a certain number of years to complete the exams before you are removed from the register and have to start all over again. ACCA has a 10 year time limit to complete the exams. I'm not sure about CIMA or Chartered.

    Hi

Although ACCA have the ten year rule, you can apply for ACCA membership at anytime after completing the exams. CIMA dont have a rule for passing exams within a certain time, but you do have to apply for CIMA membership within five years of passing the exams.

Neil

I would agree with the replies above and add that sometimes if companies have paid for your tuition and fees etc they may "Time Bar" you so that if you leave before an agreed date you have to repay some of the costs. Afterall, if they pay for all your training they want to get some benefit from it.

Some companies go overboard on this though. My previous employer offered to pay for my Technician year (when I had done foundation and intermediate off my own back with no support from them) on the condition that I stayed for another 3 years! Funnily enough I said no, paid for it myself and left 3 months later :o)

Good Luck!
