Hi Daniel

I emailed the student services last week and this is the response I got

'Thank you for your e-mail.
Unfortunately, the date for this has not yet been confirmed.
It should be available from the 1st week of March online on www.aat.org.uk '

No mention of it being sent to us. So I dont know what is going on. If you can give us Paul Bowen email address, I will send a email to him as well, the more he gets then maybe he will respond.

I passed as well (dont know how) but I agree with you, I would like to know whether they thought that the questions were unfair and the time to short to complete.

Bye Bye

To be honest, I dont think the questions were unfair at all. If anything, they were challenging. Its not meant to be easy.

I'd be interested to hear the feedback - and like Jun 04's ECR, I expect the AAT to say that students should have been aware of how to handle what was being asked. Im tired of hearing people say that old chestnut about how questions were 1) 'different from past papers' or 2) 'not covered in the textbook'.

1) If they were in the same format as past papers, that would be defeating the object....

2) If they were not covered in the textbook - thats the fault of your AAC, not the AAT.

Admittedly, I found section 2 hard and was a bit miffed after taking the exam. But the PEV paper did not have questions outside the realm of what we were meant to know. If people done adequate revision, showed simple logic and understanding and gave answers relative to the subject matter, then they should have passed. Its an NVQ for christsakes!! I think the bulk of the problem lies where the AAT performance criteria is not followed - some sections may not be adequately covered in lessons/textbooks and therefore students should be aware of this.

    Ben

I am sorry I have to totally disagree with you on a couplepoints you mention. The questions were challenging, no one is denying that but the style of question 2.2 was new even if the content wasnt, no where in any of the syllabus does it mention a need to understand business takeovers and how this is reflected in a P&L account.

I revised from 2 books, BPP and Osborne and I can assure you that in neither of these books covered this and neither did my college and speaking to other students they hadnt been shown how to do this style of question. So who is to blame, the AAT for not checking the books, or the book companies for missing some ellements of the syllabus

I did adequate revision as you say and still found the paper hard, so I dont agree with you on that point. I think from speaking to fellow the students they also agree that paper was unfair and it seems the AAT has understood this by the number of people who struggled with the paper but passed.

Hi Ben

I also disagree with some of your comments and to be honest I found them offensive.

I am a distance learning student, working from the BPP books with hardly no tutorial support (my work does not support day release and my local colleges do not run evening classes), so I have to be able to rely on the format and content of the books and to an extent, past papers. So is it my fault that no suggestion of this type of question was in the books, shouldnt the book companies work closer with the AAT to ensure such questions/context are covered.

I put every spare minute I had into revising for approx 2 months so I felt I was prepared for anything the exam might offer. But I did struggle with both section two and the time limit of the exam with two memo/reports to write. I just finished writing as the time limit was up with no time over to check my paper.

I fail to see how else I could have prepared for this exam, I tried to show logic and understanding in my reports as you state and I did pass. I also tried to ensure that all of my revsion practices fulfilled the P.C.'s of this unit beforehand as I am aware that sometimes other subjects can be covered.

And as to your comments that 'it's only an NVQ for christsakes' if you are so clever that you found this paper easy and dont respect the hard work that I and many other students put into this course, why are you doing AAT instead of ACCA or CIMA?

Regards

Ben

These are some of you comments that you made in the year about the exam:

'Try and get hold of as many past papers as you can and thoroughly cover all questions/answers in the back of the FTC textbook'.
'
Although your training provider (BPP / FTC etc) will cover all subjects in their workbooks, there may be items that you have not covered in Depth'

I notice you say that all of the books WILL cover ALL Subjects and to use past papers to revise. Does it make you feel clever to knock everyone who worked hard for this exam?

Firstly,
I'm sorry if Ive caused offence and apologise to all subsequent people who read this thread and are offended by my comments. I dont think the tone of my language helps, although Im not backtracking on what I have said. Obviously, my study situation is different from some and Im very fortunate to be able to attend day release, receiving excellent tuition.

Trinity/Daniel,
I do respect the hard work you and others have put in, which is why you have both passed. If there is something tested that has not been tested before, then the pass mark will obviously be lowered to reflect this; so, as long as people showed general competence in both sections they would have been fine. Why do people complain when they have passed? This is what I find odd. Sure, I was worked up after coming out of PEV, but I knew that I tried to the best of my abilities. I too studied my ass off - an hour a day on the train and an hour on my lunch break, religously.

If people want to quote comments I have made, then thats clever. You got me.

The point about the AAT being an NVQ, is that one needs to show 'competence'. Its not quantified sheerly by exams. Like I said, if you show good understanding and your revision shines through, this will achieve its purpose.
And I had the option to do whatever I wanted, by the way. My employer suggested AAT, to give me grounding for when I go onto CIMA.

As you say you had day release which puts you at a advantage over many people doing the exam. It may seem straightforward but trying doing the subject after a long hard day at work when you are exhausted and your mind is not clear, sitting in a local college at 8.30pm at night twice a week !! Saying this I am Just off to college in 20 mins !!

Also there are people in hard situations with young families or dependant relatives that dont have the time to cover more than the book and are relying on quality teaching.

The main reason I have made my comments about the exam is at the time I wasnt happy with the style of the paper and although I have passed I think its important that the AAT provides some sort of feedback on comments students have made. I received comments for the Intermediate Papers and this gave me some happiness that they were listening. I havent changed my mind about the paper just because I passed it and maybe I should forget about it but I wont

    AAT,

I have not forgotten either about the exam feedback "that you promised would be on the website by now", we all are still waiting and as the rush to mark papers and distribute results to students has now passed, I think you should make it a priority to post the feedback on this website. As Daniel says show us that you are listening and that you care about your students.

To other students who complained about PEV & PCR, I have sent Paul Bowen an email. The more people who put pressure on the AAT to do this for us, the more chance will get a result.

Regards,

Nafisa

Dear all, when you say you have complained about the exam do you mean you have put in an actual appeal or just complained that you thought it was unfair or maybe that some rules were broken during the exam?
I see a lot of people on the forums have complained about this exam but I thought the only thing we could do was 'appeal' and pay to get a re-mark and report.
I too hated the second section (which I failed by the way) so would love to get some feedback. I was quite convinced I had answered it well and it even pretty much matched the 'sample' answers given by the regular forum poster 'Sandy Hood' and other people who passed.
What feedback are AAT planning on posting on the site? Full chief examiners comments or what? I would love to see how the proper answer differed from mine.

Confused !

Cheers.

"The paper, model answers and (the bit you really want) the Chief Assessor's (CA's) report on candidate performance will be available early March from the website." This is the information I received relating to PCR. I passed this exam but there was one small part where I think I lost the plot a bit and judging by the website at that time so did everyone else. I really just wanted to see what the model answer for this part was as there seemed to be such a wide variation of theories at the time. Hope this helps a bit.

Response from Paul Bowen, Deputy Examinations Manager (Communications and Services), AAT:

"Please bear with us. Although not yet formally announced, the Data and Tasks, Suggested Answers and Chief Assessors' reports for all December 04 (also J04 and D03) papers will soon be available free from our website. Our IT people are putting the finishing touches to the pages (which will be upgraded soon with the addition of a search facility) and we hope to be live next week. Sorry about the delay in replying for some of you, I wanted to be fairly sure we were going to be ok to go live before speaking to you."

So I think we will have the feedback soon, If we don't get it by the end of next week i.e. 4th March, we should pester them again.
