The first basis period is always start of trading until the next 5th April. It's the second year that is complicated. The only way to learn it is to study the diagram and learn it off by heart. There is no other way.

Annette

    Hi there,

basis periods confused the hell out of me too, but when I spoke to my tutor (distance learning) and asked her about them, her answer was to stop looking at then too deeply and accept them for what they are! Personally thought she was round the twist, explained this to my husband who said, "lets have a look", so he sat down, read the book and promptly did the task without a blink!, (he's a design engineer) So I thought I must be really stupid, until he said it's quite obvious really, so I read it out loud and as I was reading it started to make sense, my tutor was right I was trying to over complicate things and make it logical, which of course taxation isn't. But it must have worked because I passed in December. So I suggest you read it again and see it for what it is, just a set of rules that you have to apply. Good luck. Sarah.
