SSAP's/FRS's

Hi

Does anyone know whether it is possible to buy 'revision cards' or similar which summarise the key points of all the SSAP's/FRS's ? I'm using Osbourne books for DFS and they suggest buying cards and writing the key points down on a separate card for each standard which sounds like a good idea but I don't want to waste time doing that if someone has already produced something like this.

Incidentally, if such revision cards are available for other subjects (tax perhaps ?) can anyone let me know where I can buy them from ?

Thanks.

    Hi.

You can search for SSAPs on the Accounting Technician site- lots of useful information, or visit www.asb.org.uk

Scott.

I would just write on a postcard the relevant SSAP's & FRS's that are applicable to you. By writing them on the card yourself it's likely to be easier to remember in the exam than using a pre written standards in technical jargon......

Can speak in authority on this one as I've just spent most of the day doing just that - was dreading someone replying saying, 'Yes you can buy this - I no longer need mine and will post it to you free of charge'! It is very time consuming and really wished I had done this as I went along but I have to say it has been much more productive in terms of revision than simply reading the passcards which I also have. Also, there are quite a lot of standards in the Osborne book and standards we have touched on in college that aren't in the passcards - possibly because we only need to know an outline but I wouldn't think that they will all be totally irrelevant to the unit criteria.

It's also useful to write things in such a way that will help you to remember - I use acronyms and although you could make notes on the passcards it does help to write things in the order you can most easily remember.

Good luck to all who try this. Someone else posted a message to say she left her record cards with all the standards in the toilet and made a point of reading them at every visit. Not sure I ever spend that long in the toilet but will certainly give it a go in the bath! Look out for the message next week when I say I wish I'd bought a laminator!!

I also like to revise in the bath, i think its ideal to do it while your relaxed and it's more useful than reading a magazine (which i usually do).

my advice is to put your cards in plastic wallets to prevent them becoming water damaged!!

These are handwritten cards (both sides in some cases) and worded in ways to help me remember including some diagrams. Don't really lend themselves to being e-mailed very successfully but have sent you a list of essential standards hugely summarised so you will need to be sure they are only used as a revision tool and that you are confident in how to apply them if the need arises. Hope this helps - they are only very short so if you want to place them on cards it shouldn't take you very long at all.

Sent e-mail Helen - remember they are very abbreviated. Something else which I have tried and has worked within a couple of hours only. Typed out the standard, number and heading only in a list and printed it out on card - have place one in the bathroom(!) one in my college folder and another I am using as a bookmark for whichever book I am reading. Was really concerned I would get the heading and number of standard right but misquote whether it was an SSAP or FRS. I have to say I was becoming obsessed at my lack of memory in this area but as I say within a couple of hours I have managed to memorise them all and can now focus on the practical side of applying them in exercises. Good luck.

    Hi

I went out and bought a notebook and am now proceeding to write notes on all the standards as I learn them. Did the fixed asset ones last night and you are right in that it does make learning them easier when you write it down (will test that theory tonight when I do the questions !)

Can anyone let me know whether we have to know the actual SSAP/FRS nos ? I think I'll be OK with knowing what the standards are all about (i.e stock is valued at lower of cost and NRV, that sort of thing) but I'll struggle to remember which SSAP it is.

Don't want to waste revision time on this if its not really needed......

Thanks

    Hi Nicky.

As long as you refer to the correct one, you won't lose marks for not stating the number.

If you can't remember the number use phrases like 'we value stock at the lower of cost & NRV according to the relevant SSAP', 'there is an FRS which states how we deal with depreciation'.

I think there's 15 to remember for Technician Level.

Scott.
