I am trying very hard to teach myself the DFS unit having left my college. I am struggling a little to get my head around everything I need to learn. I have printed out all the help sheets that people have posted on various web sites etc. Can anyone either point me in the right direction or simply tell me it can be done because I am feeling I have bitten of more than I can chew and this is my last unit at Technician level. Like alot of mums everything else like housework, GCSE's and work seems to get in the way.

Thanks in anticipation for your help

Helen

DFS - Can it be done
Dear Helen

I think everyone is having trouble with DFS. I go to college and there's about 10 in class and we are all struggling with it. The teacher is good but there is just so much to take in. I've decided to break it down in smaller parts and concentrating on getting one bit at a time. FRA 1 Cash flow statements was hard but once you practice a few questions and understating why you are doing it, it gets easier. I'm working on Consolidated accounts at the moment. Getting there slowly!!!

Good luck just do your best.

Del0 -
DFS - Can it be done
my advice is that you have to practice previous exams and assessment kit as much as you can and try to solve every question and understand it.

If you found that you are weak in some parts do not leave them but work on them as many times as you can to get them in your brain & if you have a doubt just put it in this forum or any other forums and definitly you will get help from others.

Finally I wish you a very good luck0 -
DFS - Can it be done
Hi Helen

I would agree - I don't think there is anyone in our class who is finding it really straightforward and there are those who manage to get most of the homework right but if feels like better luck than management as none of it seems to tie in together. I think for most of us it is because it doesn't really relate to what we are doing in work.

Last year, especially in the exam, one topic would lead you into another and although we never went over the first topic again it would be drawn into your workings as everything had a logical order. This year you complete one task in isolation and then go on to something completely different which loses the sense of continuity.

I found cash flow statements an absolute nightmare and couldn't get to grips with the reconciliation statement, whether things should be deducted or added. Once this was finished in class I never looked at it again and buried my head a bit. That was the first thing I went back to in my revision and now have it cracked - can't understand why I didn't get it the first time round, so it definitely can be done.

I think the main problem, for me at least, has been the way the assessments are spread out - PCR Dec, Audit Jan, an unrelated payroll admin in Jan, MAS in March, Cash and Credit in April. I feel as though DFS and PEV have taken a back seat in order to accommodate the urgency of the other units. I'll have to do some fancy footwork to make sure I'm up to speed as time is running out.

Try to keep calm. I have children as well and work from home, but that doesn't make things easier as there is no clear cut off from work, home and study and there is always something that needs to be done. I think the key is to try short sharp bursts whenever you can. You will probably retain far more than if you try and spend hours revising at a time. Try breaking it down into mastering one topic a week rather than looking at the whole picture. Try and learn the a/c standards in between.

Good luck.0 -

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions and comments, I think like a few other people I just needed to lket off a little steam, I looked at my cashflow quickly at work and it didn't seem so much like double dutch as last week, so I am going to start again from the beginning.

Thank you everyone and good luck to you all in the rest of your examns.

Helen0 -

Yes it can be done! We started it in September and then our tutor went off sick for 8 wks so we taught ourselves. When it came to the exam I bottled it and didn't sit it but my friend did and she passed! Having seen the paper now I wish I had taken it as I think I could have passed.

Have a go and if you don't pass then at least you can say you gave it a good go. I am kicking myself now as I'm having to relearn it all at a different college.

Good luck!0 -

I agree with "sadielouise" that it can be done, I did it through distance learning and I studied for 8wks and passed from the first time, you need to manage your time only.

good luck
0 -

Do not stress out about DFS, if you managed to pass PEV and PCR first time, DFS will be a peace of cake.
Do not worry.
0
