I revised all through the year for the PEV couldnt have done more, was told to expect the same format as previous papers only to be met with a totally different format on Monday. This paper was totally pure management acountancy which I do not intend to be following in the future as I work in a practice which is purely financial accountancy. Does anyone else agree that this should be an optional subject depending on which area you intend specialising in? I find it difficult to put on a totally different mindset for study as compared to work, especially as this does not come up in the everyday work situation so that you have nothing to compare it with.

I totally agree with your comments, I did the most work I have ever done for this exam, had a good tutor and felt confident on all of the past papers. I too do not work in a management accountancy role and do not plan to, therefore I too found it hard to relate the questions to 'real life'. It does seem unfair that I need to go into such detail with management accountancy when I will never require this knowledge for my career. I would definatley agree with having the choice of taking this unit. If I had had the choice I would definatley of chosen another financial accounting paper.

i dont think this should be an optional subject, if theres anyone out there like me iv had 3 different jobs in the last 3 years while studying as i didnt know what i wanted to do. i started off in industry, moved to practice because i thought i would enjoy it more then moved back into industry because i totaly hated practice. I think its a good thing to have a range of subjects on the syllabus so we can get a feel for what each area is like!

Do remember that there is more to being an accountant than drafting a P&L and Balance Sheet, whatever your job. In this day and age, accountants are expected to be able to advise clients on many issues, not all of which will come under the narrow borders of financial accounting. Also, I think an understanding of the problems that management face can help generate a deeper understanding of what our job is all about.

At the end of the day, the AAT qualification has to give a broad base, from which you may then specialise. Be aware that if you move onto CIMA or ACCA, you will still need to study both areas regardless of which you choose.

Andrew Harrington
