I am doing Technician level via home study with Premier Training.

I have just done intermediate and have found the books and the tutors brilliant

I received the study books with a timetable outlining approximate dates for completion of certain papers.
The tutors are available daytime and evenings on the phone or via email. (I found that emails were answered very quickly.)

Basically, with home study you can work at your own pace. The tutors are there when u need them, and easily contacted to answer questions.
The study material with intermediate was brilliant. Answers are supplied for the workbooks (no for simulations that require marking though!!)

I plan to take 5 exams with the technician level, one or two at christmas, then same in june, then the tax papers next december.
You only pay the one fixed amount for the whole course, no mater how long it takes, and if you fail any paper, they continue helping you till you pass with no extra tuition fees.

There are a number of people i know of who are studying with Premier Training, no one that i am aware of has had any problems, and all highly recommend them.

Shaz

I've just had a look on the Premier Training Website, and it sounds very good. I think I may go down that route rather than the college.

Thanks again for the info and your views.

Sometimes its hard to knuckle down, but my kids are getting older, so they do their own thing in the evenings, so most evenings we find we sit watching the TV, so instead of that i sit and study for about an hour or two each evening, and more when i feel like it, or a lot less if i dont have time.
Thats the beauty of home study, it fits in with my life.
When i am quiet at work, i take out my books and do an hour or so.
On the run up to the exams or to a skills test, i tend to spend a bit more time as i have the incentive (i hate failing)
I suppose when u r at college, u have set targets to do every week, that for me would become too much of a bind, as some weeks i have other commitments, so wouldnt be able to go to college or do the work.
Its a case of 'if u want to get the qualification, then u have to be prepared to do the work'
Least with home study, u do it on your own terms, when u can, down to you to make yourself.
Forums like this are a great help, they spur you on too.
How do you all cope with motivating yourselves when studying at home? Do you set aside one day a week or couple of hours a day?
I am considering it next year but think I may find it hard to stick to a schedule.

    Lollipops,

When I spoke to Premier Training earlier, they told me that if I enrolled for the technician level, they would support me with the ECR Exam if I had to retake it for no extra cost.

We used Osborne for Foundation, BBP for ECR, and Osborne for FRA at Intermediate stage. Have also looked the Foulks Lynch books. I find Osborne books are by far the easiest to understand.

The FL for intermediate, didnt seem so bad, but I just found it harder to follow than BPP.
I have seen the stuff on the Osbourne site and it does look a lot easier to follow. I think thats got to be the way to go.
Thanks Amanda

    Thanks Amanda,
I will keep take this on board. The only thing that I'm worried about is would I be allowed to continue with Technician Level If I have one outstanding Central exam to do. (fail). I am pretty sure i have fail the centrals i did this week. The sad thing is I did excellent on the skills Test. I would also like to know what time scale do you have to complete each unit/ whole year. I was thinking about spreading this in 18 months to 2 years due to other committments. Can you do the exam if you feel ready????????
Help to put the icing on the cake. I suppose the money saved going to a college could be used to buy a new computer.
lollypops

I definately think that you should both be getting commission - lol.

I am sure that you have mentioned before but do you use Osbourne books? If so, how do you think they compare to others (assuming that you have seen others)?
Our college changed from BPP at foundation, to Foulkes Lynch for intermediate and although the BPP were more understandable, they had a lot of errors in them

    Hi again,

Just a note to anyone who is thinking about home study with Premier Training - I have just been talking to them about doing the technician level. The fees as from 1st of July will be £569 as opposed to £499 now. So it might be worth enrolling sooner than later.

The person I spoke to also said that they would also support me through the intermediate level part which I think I may have failed (ECR), as I have completed all the simulations.

I'm nearly there with my decision, I've got my toes in the water, just need to dive in. I suppose I'm scared of making the wrong decision.

    Just a note to Lollypops!

Why go to BBP just as they are closer to home!!!

Its home study - everything is done via the Post and E-mail etc...

When you sit your exam (central assessment) you DO NOT have to go to your home study provider, you go to the nearest exam that accepts external students.

Remember that some FTC sims are provided on the MSN Groups page (which I run) and you can get the support there too.

One of the providers, not sure if its bbp or ftc do not assign you your OWN tutor, you just ring any!! That to me seem to be bad organisation. With Premier you get your OWN tutor and if you really cant wait to speak to your own tutor you CAN ring the others!! It just helps when your own tutor Knows what you are doing, how you cope etc...

Amanda

You guys are selling the Home Study very well. I have been considering it and you have helped make my decission easier. I was at a bad college and left to teach myself and passed the ECR in December, I just sat the FRA on wednesday and am not sure how I did. I could really use some help as I work full time and I am six months pregnant with my first child but would like to continue with my studying to complete intermediate (portfolio) and start the technician.

Thanks for all the info!
Hi ShazAAT/Amanda,
You've both sold Home study to me. I was thinking of doing Home study and 2 units at a time with Technician Level. The teachng in my college was so crap, i had to do all the work myself at home. If I do pass FRA and ECR it's purly down to the hard work I have put in. So why pay my money to a college and extra for the books and transport to and from college and get nothing back except handouts that I can get from the website and MSN group. It did show that we haven't been taught properly as everyone was complaining after the exam. I am also thing of doing the Tech level at eithe BPP (closer to home) or FTC. I know it is expensive but is anyone out there who can give me a feedback on how they find it. Just weighing my options. I have got work and family committments and not sure if work would let me have block days off for classes. I already get a Day Release for college studies.
Can anyone advice.
lollypops

With Home Study you need a Sim supervisor.

I take mine at work under the supervision of my employer.

Amanda

I am with Financial Training Company, head office in Leeds but with offices all over the UK.

I opted for home study as I work from home anyway and find that I can fit study in with my normal daily schedules, so in that respect it's probably quite easy for me and was the obvious choice. FTP use Folkes Lynch workbooks and I have found these to also be excellent study books. Well laid out with easily understandable text, plenty of 'activities' and quizes to test you, mock exams and mock sim's. FTP also supply you with mock exams and sim's which, as with Premier have to be sent off for marking. Again, I have a 'personal tutor' who is available whenever I need although I'm not sure about in the evenings, I've never tried. I got a timetable for my study program and as long as you are able to discipline yourself (which I've been doing for a long time now!) to work at home and not be distracted by anything you'd rather be doing then I personally think it's the best way.

Bad points? Not many, I can understand the cost may be prohibitive to some, FTP charge similar amounts to Premier. My only real gripe is that contact is only one-way. I fell way behind with my work program at the beginning of this year because of ill-health in the family. I did not send work in for marking on-time and it was obvious I was struggling but at no time did I get a call or email from my tutor just to ask if everything was ok. I felt a little bit like 'you've had my money, now where's the after-sales service?' Maybe that's unfair but I did feel a little isolated. Having said that, when I made the call to them to explain the situation they immediately adjusted my timetable and offered all the help they could give and with a bit of hard work from me I caught up, sat my FRA on Wednesday and I am sitting my FRA Simulation on Tuesday, fairly confident.

I can't recommend home study highly enough, if you have the time and the inclination and despite my slight reservations I would recommend FTP to you. I now have a revised program for the rest of 2005, complete unit 7 by end Aug, then start on ECR for completion by Dec and if I'm feeling very brave also start my first Tech unit alongside also for completion by Dec. And I agree with Shaz, this forum and MSN group are great resourses too!

Go for it, and good luck!

Tim

Bit late replying to the message .... but

I can totally recommend Premier Training!!

I studied Foundation with them .. Pasted first time and now doing intermediate.

I have just took my FRA at Premier, the staff are great, My tutor remembered me from last time I visited Premier, he even knew what I had and hadnt done in my course without looking anything up - not all tutors can do that!!!
I sent a e-mail yesterday afternoon and got a reply at 8.10pm, he should have been on his way home to his family - but he was there to help me.

There is 2 evening a week where as they stay to 8pm to be able to help you if you need, although I mainly e-mail anyway.

They use osbourne books which I find great and a timetable to work too. You can go as quick or slow as you want. In foundation i had 3 months off with mum being ill and moving house and then i requested a new timetable.

If you can make time for college you can make time for home study, some evening i sit in the garden with my book and read.

When you ring Premier, say that Sharon and Amanda have recommended you!!!

Amanda
