I currently work for the council so I get a day off a week? I am looking for a new job in Leeds but Hays and RK Accountancy have both told me to get a day off is very rare. Does anybody know any companies which do offer a day off to go to college?

Well all I know is that my tutor at BPP jokes about people who get day release being from the council so I guess it is a very rare thing.

How I would love to have 1 day off per week to study - I have to go on an evening after work!

I'll give you an example - a colleague at work and her sister have both sat the same exams (ACCA). My friend had 1 week off beforehand for revising, her sister got a whole month off cos she works for the council.

It is difficult having to go study after work but you do get used to it but I would recommend that you try and stay with the council if you want 1 day off per week.

Hope this helps
Kelly

A month off!!! I only get half a day per exam!
I suppose going into the last year it may be wiser to stay, though my job sucks!

At present I'm on £13458, does this seem low/high for an intermediate studier?

A lot would depend on your age and experience, so its not possible to say if the salary is too low.
Check out the salary guids on the hays web site http://www.haysworks.com/<BR>

If you look at Accounting Technician July 2005 there are several jobs in there for AAT Intermediate students in Leeds with salaries about 14k to 16k + study which I presume means they will give you study leave. One thing I would point out is that you normally get a wonderful pension with the council and you normally would have to murder someone before they sack you. However it is an exciting world out there so happy job hunting. I would agree that the salary also depends on age and experience too.

I think you'll find it's all the big government related offices that give the most generous packages. I am no exception, I work for Royal Mail and had the choice of home study, day release etc, I chose home study even though I wouldn't have been expected to make up any of my missed work on a college day. I get 1.5 days for every exam and the whole lot is paid for by RM. I am very lucky to be a valued member of the workforce and have these opportunities, oh and the pay is outstanding and like the council, I would have to probably do something extreme to get the sack....
Seriously, be glad for what you have even if the job sucks, there are a lot more people worse off than us!
I'm on day release at FTC whilst working as Assistant Accountant for a pharmaceutical company. Any additional days for study are used from my annual holiday (24 days). I wouldnt say its rare to have a day off for college at all, there's plenty of people I know who are on day/block release for AAT and the like. Keep looking around and see whats out there.
