Yeah they are seperate. You either do simulations or portfolio work. But i know some people who are doing both for some reason. Im only doing work based evidence.

A lot depends on the level of your work-based evidence.

1. If you don't work in accounts, you obviously need to do devolved assessments to prove you can do the work.

2. If you work as an accounting technician but haven't sat the exams, then you can probably get all of your evidence from work.

3. However, for most of us, the truth is somewhere in between. For example, I've just finished Intermediate (I think) but I've only just started work at Foundation level. So, my work-based experience is very limited. Also, because of confidentiality issues, there may be some items that you cannot prove through work. (Not everyone is happy with taking photocopies of their bank statements to share with unknown college tutors.) As a result, there has to be a middle way and you usually end up doing a bit of both.

Having said that, many tutors feel that, because of the confidentiality issues, it may be better to stick with devolved assessments. After all, it does cover all aspects of the course.

By the way, the simulations are not really exams. According to what I've read of the AAT requirements, it's an opportunity for the assessor to ask more questions in clarification of your understanding.

Either way, just get in there and enjoy it!!
