Susan,
Thanks for the reply to year end procedures, there seems an awful lot involved! A bit further down titled Advice Please, I would appreciate your opinion. As you will see a lot of people are saying go for it, but I'm not so sure. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to start off with year end prodcedure, I could have gained my confidence and built up to it. Even though I sat FRA this summer, not attending college last year hasn't helped. Thing is if I say no I could miss my only chance.
Jackie.

I have seen your previous threads and I would guess you are suffering a crisis of confidence. If your current supervisor thinks you can manage it then I'm sure you can. You can get help from the accountant and there are always people with loads of experience on here who can help you with certain things. If you've made your position clear to the management then go for it - as you say, you won't get a second chance!

Good luck and post on here if you need any help

Annette

Can't you suggest sitting in with the Manager say one day a week from now until she goes? Explain that you need to learn some of the background so that you will be able to spot any discrepancies in the year end figures. Don't forget that as she plans to return after maternity leave she will want to ensure that everything runs smoothly so will probably be happy for you to contact her with any problems.

Also check to see if she has a 'friendly' contact within your Auditors practice - I have one that I can e-mail for snippets of advice and she never charges.

Remember that it is temporary, you've obviously already proved you are capable of doing your own job and you are helping them as you will be covering for someone more experienced (the obviously regard your skills highly) but will still be on hand to help out the person covering your job.

And last of all we're all still out here to help when you need it!

Good Luck

    Jackie

My advice would be go for it. The people you work with think you are capable of doing it or they wouldn't have asked. Remember it would have been just as easy for them to get a temp in to cover your Managers job as it would be to get a temp to cover your own. Year end accounts aren't as complicated as they seem. Is it one company you are doing or more than one? I know that we have standard spreadsheets here which we complete to provide our Accountants with information, as well as system prints. Why not ask your Manager to go through the year end procedure in your place. Also, as Gill suggested, why not ask your Manager if you can sit in with her once a week to start learning the job. You could perhaps use this time to plan what information you are going to provide to your auditors and then start putting together your year-end pack. Each company is slightly different in what they do for year-ends epending on the nature of their business. I just believe that the more information you provide auditors the less questions they ask!

There will always be someone on here who can answer any questions you may have and if you are really stuck you've always got the external accountants to ask.

You can always e-mail me any questions you may have to susancjacobs@yahoo.co.uk

Good luck with your decision.

Susan
