Hi. I am currenty studying Foundation level. I found my course okay but am really fed up about the ways the simulations are marked and feed back given. I did my first simulation at the end of May but have not as yet received anything from my college to say whether or not I have passed it.

Can some one explain to me excatly how this is supposed to work as I don't work in accounts and therefore don't really have any one I can turn to for advice.

The way I thought this was supposed to work was that you do simulation plus any extra qeustions to cover gaps.

This is marked and then passed for inetrnal verification and then you recive cover sheet back together with unit summary which you file in your folder.

How does AAT know that you have passed the unit?

And I noticed that some people are talking about getting their portfolio signed off?
What does this refer to??

Hi,

You should get your simulations back to correct within a fairly short amount of time - most of ours we got within 2/3 weeks to correct any errors and then your tutor should sign you off as competent.

The portfolios being 'signed off' is basically a folder which should have your four 'signed off' simulation exam front covers (i.e the red bit) and extra information/questions to cover anything not covered by the simulations. you can find what you need for your portfolio in the blue student record and each of these should have a piece of evidence or be covered by the simulations. Also your health and safety and personal efectiveness need to be completed and then your tutor can 'sign off' your portfolio to say that you have all the evidence needed. Have a word with your tutor about when you will be getting your simulations back to check. Hope this helps

Sara5
0 -

I am intrigued by being able to have you simulations back to correct - I haven't been given this option even though I only made small mistakes and instead have had to resit another simulation - plus just to put the pressure on I have been told you can only sit the simulation twice and if you fail twice then that is the end of your chance to complete foundation - seems a bit unfair to me if passed exam and all other units or something to just be pushed out due to one simulation failure.
I have found the simulations and whole portfolio thing a bit weird I must say.0 -

It seems to me that some colleges/tutors don't seem to have much of a clue what they're doing.

Our tutor always had our simulations marked by the next lesson. Minor errors could be ammended and there was some oral questioning if needed. Resits were only necessary if you'd really messed up. Any elements not coverered by the simulations were dealt with through supplementary exercises. On completion the unit was signed offf by the tutor and internally verified. When all units were completed, the whole portfolio was signed off. I assumed all colleges worked more or less that way.

I'm not sure of the exact process, but, with the exception of the exam, the college informs the AAT of students' acheivements.0 -

I have to say that our college worked the same way as CJC's.

Annette0 -

I am jsut annoyed at the fact that my tutor is really crap and just not very helpful with letting me have any idea when I will get my results back.

She has had longer to mark some simulations than the exams marked by AAT.

I feel really let down by her and am actually considering doing the next level as home study as I don't think I gained anything extra from doing it in college.0 -

I would definitely have a word with the college as this seems totally unacceptable to me. If they're not helpful contact the AAT. There's some info about complaining here0 -

You should receive your simulations back fairly quickly, the delay seems like your tutor isn't doing their job properly. If you get a few bits wrong, you should recieve an extra question / task to correct your mistake, only if you have made quite a few errors should you have to resit. Your tutor has a responsibility to ensure you are ready to sit the simulation before you do i, so you shouldn't fail it. The AAT do not like students taking these before they are ready because of the high level of competence needed to pass.

You may find that the simulation doesn't cover all ofthe performance criteria, this is why extra oral questions are needed, these will have to be done even if you do the simulation perfectly.

We would normally expect to return simulations within a week, at the most 2 weeks. Plus give you all the support and advice you need. This would be the same whether you choose a home study or taught course option.0
