I don't use SAGE but I do use Excel for 90% of my work.

I find excel great to work with, as long as you know how to do things it will do just about anything you wish.

The only disadvantage I can think of with Excel is that you need to set everything up yourself where as SAGE would have its own appearance, therefore you can make EXCEL as user friendly as you want.

Not sure if this is what you needed to know or not.

    SAGE/EXCEL

I use excel 100% at my work, and I also went onto Sage for first time last year.
I find excel good, but as Deedee says, everything in Excel has to be set up the way you want it, but Sage has already got that. Depends what you are wanting to use Sage for, and to what extent. If it is not getting fully utilised, then it can still be beneficial using it rather than having to set everything up from scratch in excel.

    SAGE/EXCEL

As someone who runs the accounts department of a business with a 3/4 mil' turnover of goods and services I see Sage and excel as very different systems.

I use sage to produce all the usual accounting reports - P&L, Balance Sheet, stock valuation etc, as well as daily accounting proceedures - bank rec etc. But I also use excel to track profits per job, produce add hock reports etc. However Sage is being constantly updated so that it is more useful i.e., job costing etc and it is also becoming easier to intergrate information directly into Excel.

Unless I'm missing the point I would say that the size of the business would dictate which package companies use. I personally feel for larger companies a 'proper' accounting package would be essential but smaller companies can get the result they need from excel.

I prepare accounts from clients data (which often is sage reports) and I use excel to take things from the sage trial balance to the etb and then to draft accounts. I have several templates which I can use for any type of company which will save time and once I've done someones accounts once, the template which is personal to them is always on my computer.

I also do some bookeeping for some of our clients on excel.

Annette
