I'd like to complain to the administrators of AAT that set the exam results process. The wait for the exams is painful and with one day to go I'm very anxious. However, I'm not complaining about the length of time it takes to sit and receive the results as I know that there are systems which has to been adhererd to. My complaint is that my anxiety is made worse by the fact that I do not know what the pass mark is and does it differ in each section.

ACCA and other bodies put marks next to their questions in the exam so at least you have an idea of how much a question is worth - and by giving a 50% pass mark then at least students can walk out of the exam with some idea of a pass or a fail.

Does AAT think that they are better than these other financial bodies and do not feel the need to tell their students how the pass marks are set.

I feel in the dark - from a body that I am a student member of - shouldn't these people be helping me in my studies not causing unnecessary stress by being so secretive about these results.

Come on AAT - at least give students an idea of the pass mark. This summer as been a nightmare waiting on PEV and other results and most of it because I simply don't know whether I've passed or failed because AAT won't give indication on marks in each section.

OK rant over - back to work.
Hi there ,
I totally agree with you.I am wondering why they can publish the exam paper after a certain period ,why not the answers?I do not think there are too much trouble for them, because a lot people have to wait for the exam result until tormmow then they can finally move on for the next step ,it really painful and in some sense also wasted for a long time make the right decision.

We totally understand the process of the examination ,but when decide use exam paper at the same time also should have the answers for it ,i really think it is no harm for publishing the answer at the same time of the exam paper.
0 -

There are disadvantages to the ACCA system. I took 2.1 and got a reasonable mark in it because it was an easier paper. However it has been recognised that 2.3 (which I took the week before the AAT exams and don't get the results until next week) was a difficult paper, but because the pass mark is 50% there are no allowances for a hard paper. Just that less people pass!!

At least you know if you struggled on PEV, so did many others (which was evidenced on this forum), allowances will be made for it.

There is nothing you can do but wait, at least you will know one way or the other tomorrow. I have been on these forums for a number of years, seen so many postings of people thinking they've failed and then seen those same people post that they've passed.

Annette0 -

Hi Tracey.

What percentage do you think you've got right?

Scott.0 -

As Annette says, there are disadvantages to the set pass mark system, it does make AAT more flexible that if a huge number of people get something wrong they can adjust accordingly. AAT is just a different type of qualification, because it is based on NVQs you have to "prove compentance" and that's why the pass mark can vary. I would also say having done AAT and now almost finished Cima that although the pass mark in Cima is "only" 50% it's very tough to get that 50%, much tougher than it is to achieve enough to pass in AAT. I think maybe there is some scope for the AAT publishing after the exam results what the pass mark was and telling students what % they achieved, because I have found with Cima it's helpful to know when either I'd done really well or when I've been really close to a fail. My other comment though is that even knowing the pass mark I have often been entirely wrong about how I've done - when I'd thought I did really well I gained 51% and when I thought I'd failed I got 84%. So don't think if AAT published a pass mark you would know whether you'd passed or not, you wouldn't know until the results are out just as now. But good luck to everyone I'm sure you've done fine.0 -

Scott,

Section 1 I think was almost perfect - PEV my favourite subject. However, section2 was really poor. Didn't have time to finish the paper properly with only a few minutes to answer 2.2. My report looked liked a dogs dinner with workings mashed in between.

If I went by Section 1 I would say I passed - however Section 2 I haven't got a clue. So rushed didn't have time to fully commit to the question.

Thats what I mean - is the pass mark for section 2, 50% or 75% - I really don't know.!!!! If I have to pass each section independantly then I don't know.... I think there are others that feel the same way as me....

What's your comments0 -

Hi Tracey.

You do have to pass each section individually. If you fail one section you will have to re-sit the whole paper.

No-one knows for sure how well they did, or what percentage they got right, so if the AAT published the pass mark we still wouldn't know if we'd passed or not, it would just give us something different to worry about!

Try to relax - the waiting is almost over.

Scott.0 -

As I said before, PEV was fair "Except" task 2.2 which was really tough "my nightmare" and the second problem was the time scale, because when I reached task 2.2 I was running out of time.

Let us pray that we passed and who knows what will happen tomorrow for you and after tomorrow for me.

Good luck everybody.0 -

Hi

This issue comes up everytime exma results time approches.

The AAT probably could quite easily give out the passing grades, but since the grades differ from each paper/sitting it could end up causing further confusion. I.e. say DFS in Dec 04 was 60% for a pass mark (thats just as an example) and then for June 05 it was 70%, due to there being slightly harder questions in the December exam. Those on the 'outside', i.e those who haven't done the exams but have an interested (such as employers) might think that the June exam is of a higer standard and anyone passing that exam is a higher acheiver.

However, I think a grading system (A, B, C, etc) with say only A-C being passing grades might be useful, that way students could now how well they passed without causing the confusion above.

Neil0
