I am going back to college in September to finish off my Technician level after having a year off. I am 28 in November and am planning on starting ACCA September 06. I have been thinking that by the time I finish it I will be 34ish. I am hoping to get into a position to gain practical experience before then. If I can find an employer willing to pay enough money and put in the time for me to gain experience.

Anyone else in the same position? or has anyone been successful in gaining a position even though you arent as young as some college leavers and need to earn a good wage to pay the mortgage?

Kerry

Hi I am 37 and have just gone back to work after 8 years. I managed to get a good job in Finance and the company have actually offered to pay for me to do CIMA so by the time I am qualified I will probably be in my 40's. So if you feel old then I am ancient.

Hi Kerry, I'll be 37 in December (the week after the exams - let's hope I'll feel like celebrating!). I have only been in accounts for 2 years, having had to change career following redundancy.

I thought that I would never get a suitable job due to my age and lack of accounts experience but persistance paid off. I registered with as many accounting agencies as possible, applied for all relevant positions in the paper and even did a mailshot to local accounting firms. I finally managed to persuade a local firm to give me a go in their purchase ledger department and I haven't looked back since, now I'm working for one of the "Big Four"!

So please don't give up, study hard and it will be worth it in the end!

PS this is my 1st posting on this forum, although I've been "watching" since I started my AAT a couple of years ago - so Hi everybody and well done to all of you who have passed exams this time round

    Hi

Like Disco1 I too joined last year but first actual reply to any threads'- but thought this would cheer you all up. There's hope for you all

last year I started intermediate - made a decision that I had two choices to start my AAT or be fat and 40. Didn't think I could cope with study and doing something about my weight!

But Hey decided to go for AAT and put the slimming on hold - miracle of miracles, managed to do AAT and Pass and lose 1 1/2 stone since easter. Celebrated my 40th birthday along with my daughter's 18th a couple of weeks ago.

My only regret is I didn't do my AAT 20 years ago.

I say go for it, I'll probably be 45 before I finish studying If I decide to go further after Tech.

Good Luck to everyone whatever you decide.

Hi Kerry

I have just turned 43. I took up AAT in a mid-life crisis. I hope to complete AAT next summer - when my daughter is doing her GCSE's. I wish like smithy256a that I had done this twenty years ago - instead I did the book-keepers exam which doesn't hold some much prestige.

You are never too old to go for it.
Best of luck
Eva

    Hi All

Thought I would join in with the age debate ;-)

I have just finished Tech year at the age of 46 and took the exams at the same time as my daughter did her GCSE's .......now that is not recommended !.........and she is still waiting her results.

I dont want to stop studying now but due to unforseen circumstances I will not be able to start CIMA till after December but I am still going to have a go.

It will mean me being not too far off 50 when I finish and I know to some people thats a complete waste but then I dont feel any older than I did when I was 18 and no one would have stopped me then so they are not going to stop me now.

I have no intention of retiring either I had 15 years retirement to bring up my children and enjoyed every minute of it so its my turn to work now. With the introduction of the 'new' age discrimination act I should be able to carry on as long as I have all my faculties.....that would be until the next exams then !!!

So dont give up .............ask yourself .........'why am I doing this ' and then grit your teeth and do it!

Best of luck to everyone in what ever they decide to do

alley
xxxxx

And just to add on, I am 39 and have just passed the four tech exams I took in June which completes the AAT which I started 3 years ago.
I am considering ACCA at the moment.

I would just like to say I feel as young as ever and if anything probably better equipped to handle study and exam pressures than I was 20 years ago.

Life is for living, bring it on!

David

    Well said David!

I will be 34 in November and have just completed Tech level, am going on to ACCA next Jan and after reading all these posts feel much more enthusiastic than I was feeling.

I just wasnt ready for studying when I was younger, ie in my early 20's....I think it depends for each of us...but the bottom line is, it doesnt matter when you do it as long as it suits you to do it and its something you want to do.

Good luck everyone...xx

Thanks for the replies, makes me feel better knowing there are quite a few people out there in a similar situation.

I agree (David) I wasnt ready to do this straight from school so I guess I should stop moaning/worrying and get my a** in gear and get on with it!

Thanks again!

Kerry

    HI there

I have just completed technician and I am 35. When I started, I thought that I would be the oldest in the class, but most people were my age and I met some great people. I am now considering CIMA. I struggled at school with maths and never, ever thought I would be in this position. I am so chuffed. I want to keep on studying as I really enjoy it and it has helped me so much in my job (my husband and I run our own business and I do the accounts)

So you are never too old! When I was younger I didnt have the opportunities or the money to do the AAT. I never dreamed I could be an accountant, so I want to carry on as much as I can.

Life is for living so you go for it ! It makes me feel better that there are people of my age on these forums, you imagine its all "young uns"

Have just got my certificate today - I still cant believe I have done it !!!!!!

just to jump on the band wagon with all these 'oldies' and say how it has really helped to read it and see that there are more 'mature' students than i thought!

i have just done tech ( someone said they had received their certificate already??? ) and i turn 40 next january so older than some on here but also younger ;-))

it does feel like a great achievement and i feel proud to be able to put letters after my name and say i am a fully 'qualified'' something!!
what do you do ? is the question most people ask nowadays......... wont be afraid of that question anymore.
as for doing acca?? still thinking about that one!!
i am like SEdwards on here and do the accounts for our own business and it has helped but i do feel i want to know more to help me in doing the accounts to a higher level for ourselves ( and save ourselves some money!!)
but with working full time in our own business plus some 13 week days and 16 hour days, two young kids under 10, house hubby etc etc have i got it in me to do more studying?? and home study at that so more determination required?!!

GOOD LUCK to all, thanks for the uplift on my feeling younger now ;-)

Don't worry..I took up AAT as I was told I and another 3 people in our office were being made redundant. As it turned out, because of my age, I was kept on. ..I'd been there 29 years. In between, I took up doing AAT in case I needed to apply for another job, and it would give me the qualification for the work I already do. I was actually kept on in another part of the Finance department, but as I had started AAT, I was detemined to let them know that I could do it! So they actually funded me to carry on. I started at 50, and I am on the last lap. The others in the office are all doing CIMA, but there is an age difference of 24 years between them and me, so I don't see me doing that I'ts never too old!
