I have completed intermediate and PCR, PEV and cash management at Technician level. I only need DFS to complete my AAT. My problem is that I have never worked in accounts at all and so have no experience. Does anybody have any ideas how to get in! I have tried everything

Can't find a job in accounts
Alydia

I started using the Reed website last August when I knew I was going to made redundant. I finally found a job (through other means) in February. At that stage, jobs which Reed had put on their website in September were STILL showing up even tho they'd gone (I know this because I managed to get interviews for about 10 of them and they were given to other people).

Reed also seem to have no understanding of accountancy terms either. I have an accounts degree and have worked in accounts for 10 years and have done all areas of accounts. I also have an extremely good CV and have worked at accoutant level in my last three posts. This meant nothing to Reed. They are just trained to look for letters (even tho they have no idea what they mean). Mention sales/purchase ledger, budgetary control, forecasting, cashflow analysis, spreadsheets, auditing, statutory accounts prep and their eyes glaze over.

Oh, and they will CONTINUALLY try to get you to temp (this is where they make their money). It did not matter how many times I told them I wasn't interested the words did not sink in.

The only agency I found to be any good was the one that got me the job I have now. Martin Ward Anderson based in Herts.

Sure hope u have better luck :-)0 -

Don't forget to try every avenue. When I let my last job I actually arranged an interview from someone in my college group who had no experience. She got the job!

Only 10% of jobs are obtained through adverts (so I've been told) so talk to every one, you don't know who they might know looking for someone. Good luck and keep trying!0 -

Good luck with the interview Alydia. I'm sure you'll be fine. Concentrate on what you have got experience in and the fact that you are enthusiastic to learn more. When you say 'someone like me', I assume you mean someone who's putting themselves through hell (AAT) to better their chances of a good career, someone who obviously has the ability to undertake challenging tasks, seeing as you've got to Technician Level and someone who's not willing to give up when they have a knockback or two??0 -

I agree with Nicky Allen, that is dreadful Sonia. I had a bad opinion of them from my own experience but reading about what's happened to you two, it's gone down even firther!

I too am trying to widen my experience and trying to get into a better job, but Reed really deflated me. I went to their 'interview' and told them about me, what I could do etc, and what I wanted to get from my next job (career progression, more experience, better pay etc) and she actually said well it's all very well telling me what you want, but what have you got to give? Which really made me feel bad.
She said I was aiming above my position (I am an accounts assistant but have no limited company experience which is what I want) but today I've been on the net looking and there ARE jobs just like the role I have in mind that want an AAT Technician.
So I've also registered with Hays today and have an interview on Friday woo hoo! The role is an accounts assistant dealing with, yes you guessed it limited companies, and the chance to train on some audits. I might not get it, but at least I now know that there ARE jobs are out there, and they are prepared to at least interview someone like me.

Alydia0 -

Thankfully, I never did leave my job and shortly afterwards my boss was made redundant so I took over most of her responsibilities, so I gained more knowledge without having to leave and be the 'new girl' somewhere.0 -

Crumbs Sonia ! I thought my experience was bad.

Its disgusting that they didn't respond to your complaint.0 -

I'd like to add to the comments about Reed. I registered with them when I started Intermediate level because I had been working in Purchase Ledger for 10 years and felt that it was an appropriate time to expand my experience. They never tried to get me anything except, PL even though I'd specified that I wanted something other than that. Also, they sent my details, on spec, to my employer! Although it didn't have my name it did state my DOB which does stand out, my level of qualification and what I was currently studying. Although my boss at the time wasn't the sharpest pencil in the box it wouldn't have taken a genius to work it out! Thankfully I got to the post first and 'filtered' it out. I e-mail and wrote to Reed asking what they thought they were playing at and to this day ( 2 years ago) I have never had a reply, although they have never sent me any job specs since either.0 -

I agree, i had problems with Reed and keept being pushed to be put forward for jobs that were not what i wanted. I personally would never use them again. Their website contains lots of jobs that have been on there months too so they have more than likely been filled. Have a look in the back of accounting technician for other agencies if you want to go down that route.0 -

Ian, have you maybe thought about volunteering for a charity or something to do their accounts just while you're looking. It's something to go on your CV. But don't despair, as I'm sure something will turn up eventually, and it'll be worth the wait.

Nicky Allen, oh no, are Reed really bad, as I've just signed up to them. I only joined last week, but phoned her yesterday to see if there were any news and she said, well you're under-experienced for the jobs at the moment, and we want to get our stars in (!) but I've just been on their website and there were loads of jobs posted today that I could do! I'm going to phone her later and ask if she's considering me for these positions, but after reading your post I'm doubtful whether they exist!!

Alydia
0 -

Do NOT try reed.co.uk. They are totally pants (I speak from experience). The jobs either do not exist, or if they do then they've already been taken. Its just a blatant excuse by recruiters to get you to call them then they try to fob you off with they job THEY want you to do which 9 times out of 10 will bear no resemblance to what you actually want to do.

I would suggest sending your CV directly to companies you want to work for.0 -

I understand totally, having been in the same position, but I managed to get appropriate work 10 months ago (after looking for about a year) shortly after I started technician. All I can say is believe in what you are doing, never give up and explore every possible avenue to look for work.

Best of luck,

David0
