Hi,

I've been looking at job websites, and I don't know what the difference is between an Accounts Assistant and an Assistant Accountant, or even if there is a real difference. Also, when can you call yourself a part-qualified accountant? Is this after you have completed AAT, or do you have to be studying for ACCA/CIMA etc? I'm just curious!
Thanks

Job Title
Generally speaking, Assistant Accountant is regarded as a more "prestigous" position as opposed to "Accounts Assistant" and this can be reflected in the salary of each role.
I've seen vacancies advertising for "Accounts Clerks/Assistants" with far more responsibility and a greater degree of technical involvement than similar "Assistant Accountant" posts. It just depends on the company, the hierarchy and the perception of the accounting staff as to the naming of the job title.

As for part-qualified, there is no definitive answer. My boss would argue that a part qualified accountant is someone who has completed AAT/CAT etc and has registered to be exempt from either ACCA stage 1 or CIMA Certificate level. Others would say that you need to complete a stage of a professional qualification, i.e ACCA stage 2 or CIMA Managerial level. I've just completed AAT and wouldn't quite call myself part-qualified yet, although I've probably got far more experience than some part-qualifieds.

Ben0
