Does anybody have any advice on starting out with self employed work, tax returns etc? I am not working in an accounting practice though I am due to complete the qualification soon. I was advised that this was a great way of gaining experience if not in a firm. Sounds rather daunting to me so if anybody has experience of this, I would appreciate your input.

Many thanks

Advice on getting started????
I have just registered self employed to gain experience and importantly money!

I am the same as you not feeling too confident about a few things so I have started working on a couple close friends book keeping requirements.

So far I have found that it has given me confidence just keeping records & doing bank reconciliations. I know these are simple things but when it is real life and not a college simulation it is a little bit daunting.

Start with the small stuff just book keeping and build up to everything else, anyway you have got a while before doing tax returns as most people would have theirs in by now.

Good luck and hope it goes well

Kerry0 -
Advice on getting started????
You must be on a different planet if you think that most people have got their tax returns in - i have about 40+ clients and have done about just over 1/4 of them - a few i havent got round to, but the others have not given me their stuff yet - i know for fact that a good dozen wont bother until after Christmas!!!! So lots of opportunities for tax returns to be had.0 -

Advice on getting started????
I am goody two-shoes, but only because i needed the figure for tax credits! Otherwise it could well have waited until close to the last minute.

Moonstar - last year i sent my last tax return off on 28th January, but I know of others who were standing on the Revenue's doorstep late on 31st.
0
