hi,

I have just started studying PEV and PCR for Dec exams at college in the evenings and am finding it difficult to study in my own time and learn the formulae for variances etc. I am usually a last minute person who squats nearer the exam date, and then forgets everything two weeks after the exam! But now I do not want to just get by, but take the theory on board more pemanently. Can anyone please advise of study tips?

It might seem a bit daft, but when I was studying for the exams in June, I wrote all of the variance formulae on post-its and stuck them all over the house! You'd be surprised at how much you take in from just looking at them every time you walk from one room to another. It must have worked....I passed all my exams in June!
I'd advise to study one section at a time, until you know the subject inside out. For example. Material price/usage variances one night with worked examples, then labour rate/efficiency the next night. Also, try not to treat the study text like a novel, as it is detrimental to learning. I was told to spend 20 minutes at a time studying, have a 5/10 break and then back to study. The brain can only process a certain amount of information at any one time. I like to try and do some every day.
It may sound a little silly, but I find light music helps me study better. I read an article that said studying in a room silently is no where near as productive as studying in a room with some type of light 'noise'. The reasons they gave were that our minds are constantly active and effectively 'get bored/distracted' trying to focus on one thing, so we need to appease it by giving it something to 'keep it busy'.
Everyone has their own study routine.... and if anyone knows any tips for CIMA, let me know. Different kettle of fish from the AAT!

Ben

Why do people say CIMA is a different kettle of fish. Is it alot harder? Like how much harder would you say it is? Also how many exams would you recommend doing each sitting?
Hi,

Contrary to what people may think, I'd say there is a significant jump from Technician level AAT to CIMA Managerial level (assuming you take exemptions fromt the 5 certificate papers). Probably similar to 2x the workload from AAT Int' to Tech'. There is a hell of a lot of info to take in - and the technical language used is of a far higher standard, coupled with many calculations. Whereas in AAT you could pass an exam from simply knowing calculations, acronyms, etc, I think CIMA requires more 'creative insight' and a significant amount of further understanding on topics. It's very interesting to learn, difficult, but very rewarding. Its as difficult as I expected, but there is far more theory then I imagined, but then again, what was I to expect - it's a chartered qualification after all.

Im sitting 2 papers in November, then 2 next May/November. Some people may be motivated to study 3 at a time, but my girlfriend would shoot me if I locked myself in my study night after night.
