Hi there,

My wife has just started taking a foundation aat course at our local college and is getting really stressed about some of the non-accounts related stuff. She's only been there two weeks and from what I gather, the college lecturers seem to be pretty rubbish.

Anyway, the thing she is most stuck on at the moment is the Career Development Plan. I've looked over the paperwork she has been given (a one sheet photocopy with some general text (sound familiar? Where are you now, where do you want to be, how will you get there?) and I think I understand it but without guidance from the college and without an example, its proving difficult to write.

Can anyone here offer help? An example would be good, but guidance would certainly be useful. If it helps, she isn't currently in an accounts job, she wants to change career from her current admin job. The paperwork I've read seems setup for those on day-release from within an accounts environment which isn't helping matter.

Many thanks in advance,

Hayden

You have basicly said what you need to be putting on the sheet.

I think sometimes we (students) look far too much into the simple things.

We are you now......Well in a admin job.

Where do you want to be ...... Accountant

So break it down.

In admin job, wants to be able to prepare accounts to Trail balance and be able to under stand the Purchase and sales ledger.
How get there.... Look for accounts jnr role. study aat foundation, take any courses free from inland revenue etc to gain the knowledge.

Then you do another one saying at intermediate saying you want to be able to prepare accounts.

Is this making sense or shall i go and get my portfolio out and type what i have put.

Its basicly what you plan to do with your studys, how you are going to get there, by what method

Amanda

PS it doesnt actually mean you will do what you have put... you might change your mind later in life0 -

Star. I knew asking here would be a good idea.

Well, my wife is soooooo... stressed by this that I'm up burning the midnight oil in the hope that, come tomorrow, I'll be able to give her assurance that all will be well.

I'd really appreciate it if you could type out an example but I know that is asking a lot.

I wrote a page for her which had a para about her current position, another para about where she wishes to go and a bullet-point action plan to say that she is short-terming the course, mid-terming employment opportunities and beyond that will explore completing levels 3 and 4 of the aat but she is convinced that is not right :-(

Any help greatly appreciated. I'm going back to bed now, will check back here tomorrow morning.

Thanks again,

Hayden0 -

I wouldn't worry too much about that, If I remember rightly it took me about 30 seconds to scribble down some answers on mine, don't think it really matters what you put down as long as it seems reasonable!

Certainly not worth getting stressed out about!0 -
career development plan
Hi

It sounds as if the career plan is an internal issue at the college, probably so the college fulfulls its 'requirements' to do more than just spout out knowledge on a subject. When i was a fulltime student (in a different subject to accounting) we had to complete learning agreements that basically said what course we were doing and the required outcomes etc.

It probably wont effect her AAT qualification, though the college will probably want it in the accounting portfolio.

Neil0 -

My wife is easily stressed, something of a perfectionist and did I mention the stress thing? :-) I think the only reason she is worrying about this is the fact that she has no guidance. She'll breeze the actual accounts stuff, but all the other stuff that seems to go into this qualification is the stuff that she doesn't like doing.

Thanks for the kind words.0 -
