Hi

Just wondered what the exam was like and whether anything cropped up that was a bit of a wobbly and unexpected ??

What are the key areas I should focus on for the 'wordy' bits ? I know I obviously have to know how to calculate all the variances and ratios for the more number crunching bits.

Any comments gratefully received !

A new examiner took over in June 05 and he seemed to move away from the rote way of presenting variances, so make sure you know how to do them out of order! Filling in the missing blanks of an equation was a new feature in Task 1.2 ('backward' variances, i.e., the answer was given, together with the variance, and you had to work out what the original price per kg.was) plus a memo explaining the reason - so be sure you can explain possible reasons for variances and Task 1.3 was ABC, which seems to be very fashionable now, you need to be able to explain the difference between this and total absorption costing (TAC). Section 2 in June referred to Section 1, which threw a lot of candidates, as the sections used to be wholly separate from each other. Learn the ratios off by heart and what they represent (liquidity, etc) and show the workings, just in case you get the ratio right but the calculation wrong (it's easier to check your answers, too).

Section 2.2 is usually an analytical type question, requiring a report or memo, explaining & recommending things to the directors as a result of your findings in Task 2.1 (or the first section). As you will be tired by then, draw a rough skeleton during the reading stage of the exam right at the beginning, of appropriate headers in the style required, with a brief note under each and notes to self, such as 'be expansive in the recommendations'), so that when you get to it half the work is done, for half the points are for style & presentation.
