Re:The portfolio
I'm in the same situation, I work in practice and have no clue as what to put in my portfolio. I've just been putting copies in of everything I've done so far, but now my portfolio is full! Any help would be much appreciated

Re:The portfolio
I don't work in accounts at all, so I can't be specific about practice work but here's some general advice.
The introductory section to the student record contains some advice on what can be used as evidence. If you don't have a copy you can download from here.
For all units except for 22 and 23, skills tests can cover most of the evidence requirements. In my case, my tutor set extra coursework to cover the bits the skills test didn't but workplace evidence is fine. You can use work-based evidence instead of doing the skills tests if you want but this seems like more work to me.
Units 22 (Health and Safety) and 23 (Achieving Personal Effectiveness) don't have skills tests so you've got to have workplace evidence (or some adequate substitute) for everything and most people find these a right pain - there's lots of posts on this subject.
Hope that helps, if you need more advice drop me a pm.

Re:The portfolio
I mean all the client based work I have done in the office. For instance in November I did draft a/cs for a sole trader, ltd company and partnership, and I did some income and expenditure accounts so I photocopied these and stuck them in my portfolio. But I have no idea which section they'd cover or if they're any use at all, but it still gives a good example of the work that I do.
It seems so far its all based on industry/management accounting.
I think I'm going to do sims for everything, but ive been told I have to provide work based evidence as well ?

Rather than putting in your work ad hoc you are best to have a look at each of the performance criteria and finding something that you do that will demonstrate it. A lot of each of the pc's are covered by the simulation so I found it was best to use that and then find work based evidence to cover the gaps. The sims don't necessarily cover every pc but they do do most.
Our college encouraged us to use work based evidence as much as possible and it reduced the amount of sims I had to take. It was really easy, just writing statements that your line manager signed that said that you did the pc's with a few back up pieces of evidence.
Also be aware of confidentiality before putting in your clients figures.
The portfolio is daunting until you do the first one and then you realise it isn't as bad as you think.
If you have a look at the msn foundation site and join up there are some portfolio tips there. http://groups.msn.com/AATFoundation/

Re:The portfolio
Thats the point, my sort of work doesn't cover ANY of the pc's. I've talked to my boss and tutor about giving me more work that will provide some evidence instead of having to sit all the sims, but it seems impossible. So far I've sat sims then my tutor has given me some questions to cover the rest of the pc, but i'd really like to do some work-based evidence too. The evidence I've put in so far I've just put at the front and annotated it (clients names, bank details etc have been removed). Do you think I should take it out or annotate it some more and leave it? Not really sure...
Thanks

Re:The portfolio
The sort of evidence you've talked about is more suitable for unit 5 and will help there. Unit 5 is part of intermediate.
You will find your work based evidence more than helpful for the admin and health and safety units I would think.

Re:The portfolio
Hi Jo
I do not work in the financial sector yet but have found that your Sims will cover most of the criteria you need for your portfolio.
The bits that are missing you should be able to get from your work place or extra assignments can be set by your tutor.
Hope this helps
