Any Tips for June 06 DFS Exam UNIT 11

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what may come up on the June 06 DFS Exam and what to focus on in order to pass the exam as I really need to pass this exam!!!!

    I would suggest focus on Group Accounting and International Standards - particularly those which are examinable in your DFS syllabus. Try to get a good BUT basic knowledge of all the IAS and consolidation techniques. You don't have to have in-depth detailed knowledge of the subject - just a good basic knowledge of the whole syllabus. Try not to question spot as well - just because a subject appeared last time doesn't mean it won't come up again in June.

    Cash flows are always a hot topic as are ratio analysis. In terms of ratios, it's probable that you will have to calculate some and comment on them in the form of a report to a third party to prove you are capable of not only the number crunching but talking about what they represent.

    I will repeat again the importance of not question spotting because students do this at their peril.

    Also keep a good check of the Accounting Technician Magazine and read relevant articles as these are sometimes examined.

    I sat this in Exam in December and failed the second section :(
    For the first section make sure you know how to do a consolidated b/s and how to amortise goodwilletc.
    In the second section you have to know all the formulas for the ratios and will be asked to do some calcluations using the formulas. Also make sure that you know all the FRS's and SSAP's this was my downfall and i failed to answer the writtten questions on these.

    if you click on to the example exam for the dfs on this site (it was located on the student home page)it gives guidance notes and proformas and an example of the new exam.i found it useful as it tells you the ias practices that may appear.

    I agree with leelee absolutely - this is the first exam under international standards, but a look at the specimen paper will tell you that the content should not vary too much from previous papers.

    As for the IASs, try to understand their intent rather than learning them "parrot fashion" - that way you will be able to apply them to different scenarios.
