Ive been trying to (also doing an accounting degree) and have had no look so far, but it is possible as some people my course have got places simply by writing around local practices out of the telephone book.

    hi lincs

Do u mean just writing letters to the local accountancy pract. and asking them for training? i never think about that. but i ithink my problem is more complicated because i finished my degree in 1997 and i got my children and raised them up after that i decide to go back to the accountancy carrer that why i started my AAT to go back to track BUT i am very disappointed with what is going on and started to think i am useless..........

    Re:looking for work experience

Im not sure i'd bother writing for work experience if I were you, I probably just write around to loads of local businesses and recruiting agencies for a job. Even if the job is not to hot to start with at least you can get your foot in the door.

    HI everybody

I wrote loads of letters to the local accountancy firms but always the answer is unfortunatly we cant take you as volunteer trainee even, some times because they dont have enough resources or they need some one with higher level of experience :( SO how can i get this experience

    Re:looking for work experience

If the worst comes to the worst start as an accounts clerk somewhere, and if you can't even get that try as admin assistant. Alot of people say the best way to get a job is to already have a job.

I started as a payroll clerk, then an accounts clerk, then an accounting technician, then an accounting software consultant. 3 out of 4 of those positions were different firms.

Maybe someone else on here has some ideas?

    Re:looking for work experience

I've just got a training place in practice at the age of 36. I was having no luck even getting an interview but then tagged along when my friend went to see his accountant. I mentioned I might be looking for work experience at some point and a week later I was offered a paid training place. So my only advice is to not get down and look for any opportunity no matter how small.

    Re:looking for work experience

Voluntary work is often spouted as being fantastic, and in many ways it is good but if you want the non politcally correct truth its a last resort option (in my humble opinion). Might get a verbal kicking from other members for saying that though!

Not that I really know that much about voluntary work or the skills it lets you put into practice.

Voluntary work can be a last resort, but it is better than nothing when you are trying to gain work experience.

I do prefer to find any training position in accountancy firms, but i feel my self not in position to choose. i want to take your advice this office they never mention any thing about payment is that mean it just a training position and they dont pay any thing. i did'nt really asked about any kind of payment . so do u think it going to be voluntary as well i dont know......

    Re:looking for work experience

I don't know to be honest, but i'm 90% certain that the summer graduate work experience placement schemes are paid and if you are older and wiser than that coupled with your AAT I can't see why you won't get at least minimum wage. (assuming we are talking about this potential placement with a firm rather than the voluntary work). In fact they might be required under law to pay you minimum wage even though it is a training position, I had a quick look on the DTI website and it appears so.

If it was me I wouldn't mention money until I had actually been offered the job though.

    Re:looking for work experience

I would like to think that if any work is voluntary it would be mentioned at the interview that you won't be getting paid. Likewise with paid work, it will be mentioned as well. Good luck with whatever you chose to do, you have obviously worked hard for it.
    Best wishes

    Re:looking for work experience

    Hi every body

as i promised i will let you know how things will go... i received today a letter from one of the local accountancy firm telling me that they would be able to take me as trainee only around end of this month till July and they need some work during summer time as well. I think i should grab on any thing that would give a push. and i did an arrangment to start a vouluntary work as finance assistant as well i think them both could give me a reasonable level of expierance so as to be able to apply for better ones later or what do think Buddies........

    Re:looking for work experience

    Dear Salwa
I think you are on the right track. I am also looking to gain some work experience either through working voluntarily or by anyother means. So, congratulations! Looks like your persistence is going to pay off soon in terms of getting you to a permanent place of work.
Please keep us updated, it would encourage those of us who are in the same situation
    All the best
    Tom

    Re:looking for work experience

    Hello everyone,
thought I'd join the discussion as I'm also trying to look for work experience.
I'm a maths graduate (2000) who is changing careers from teaching and am thinking about doing AAT this September. I've not been to work for over a year now as I had a child in January last year.
I know how tough it is looking for work as a trainee ACA, I've been writing to practices too but have yet to succeed. Probably because I don't have a strong accountancy background and that I've been out of work for a year which is why I thought that doing the AAT might help.
Anyway, well done on getting an interview and hope that it goes well.
