Relevant experience for CIMA

Can anyone please tell me what experience you need to do CIMA. I am currently in my last year of AAT, and I have 3 years accounts work experience, in balance sheet recs and purchase ledger including a lot of sage job costing work.

    Hi Paul.

Your AAT qaulification will be enough. You will probably get exemptions from the first part.

Thanks Scott, I was worried that not yet having worked in preparing final accounts may hold me back, regardless of my theoretical knowledge. You have cheered me up.

Paul, i won't pretend it'll be easy, but if you can pass AAT, i'm sure you'll be fine with the step-up to CIMA.

Scotty is spot on. The process of studying means that you enhance your career prospects and job prospects. Not everyone works in direct accounts preparation. The fact that you have not got experience of such will not hold you back at all.

Go for it and don't be worried about not having the experience - you will get the experience as you become more and more qualified. As Scotty says (and as those who have studied further qualifications will agree) it isn't easy but then again you only get out what you put in! It's worth it in the end.

    Good luck

Peogeot your advice, as always, is whole heartedly encouraging! I am due to complete AAT in June with only 2 more exams left to pass. I then aim to start on CIMA, but my worry is, is it possible to start CIMA in August/September and be ready for three exams in November? Has anyone else done this and been successful? I ask you because your ded brainy!

I intend on studying CIMA once I pass AAT but that will only happen at the start of 2007 for me.

It's going to be tough to study three courses and sit them in one go, but it can be done. A friend of mine managed to do it. She worked long hours but as soon as she finished work she would go to college and study what was covered in the last lesson and read over the following chapters in time for the next lesson.

I would strongly recommend you try the same method if you intend on sitting three in one go!

    Good luck for June!

    Hi Michelle,

    Thanks for the compliments!!

It's all down to what you want to achieve, really. I mean, when I did ACCA I used to do about 3 exams at a time - only because the ACCA insist you sit your final 3 in the same sitting so I thought it best to get into the routine of that sort of pressure.

It is possible to be ready for 3 exams in the space of a couple of months (I did it) but it does take a lot of hard work but which exams don't?? Like I said before, you only get out what you put in.

You'll be fine. I say to students who I come across in my day to day work that it's better to get them out the way now and enjoy the benefits of your hard work later when you have loads of time to do so (and there's nothing better than the celebratory night out when you've done them (though I can't quite remember all mine!! )) Having said that, it's not wise to put yourself under too much pressure - you could end up extremely pressurised!

    Good luck and kind regards
    Ste
