Quick reminder on how to work out the variance plz

Ok well title says it all really but here it goes as to how i think variance should be calculated but im not so sure so a reasurance off somebody would be very appreciated indeed.

Old(i.e last years figure) - New(this years figure)

old-new divided by old and then multiply by 100 = the variance


am i correct in the above statement, plz let me know anyone, thank you in advance.
