ECR Exam - June

Hi Guys

Hope you are all well. Need some advice please. I admit that I cannot stand management accounts subsequently learning the subject has been like learning a foreign language. I had decided to only take the FRA exam in June,(of which I love the subject matter and spend many hours reading every available piece of information) but as I have already paid for ECR I suppose I should give it a go.

What I need is some recommendations as to what I need to know, and where I can find the information out without confusing myself too much. I doubt I will ever use the knowledge again as I detest the subject, but it would be nice to get the exam over and done with before attempting Technician in September.

I have Osborne books, if I'm honest with myself the books are more than adequate but as I approach the subject kicking and screaming in defiance as I don't want to do it, nothing sinks in!

Am I a lost cause??? Just need someone to give me the kick up the backside to get on with it and stop putting it off!!

Cheers and take care!

    Re:ECR Exam - June

Hi Columbia, I was going to post on here asking where
you were a couple of weeks ago ' cos I hadn't seen anything on the forums from you for a while, but glad to see you are back! I am REALLY STRUGGLING with unit 6, I just cannot seem to remember any of the formulae for costing. I took on some extra work after Christmas that was only supposed to be for a week or two, I thought I would have plenty of time to learn, but the extra work has kept going and I am
getting further and further behind with my studies!
I really cannot see that I will be ready to take the exam, but like you, I've paid for it so feel I have to give it a shot, even though you are right when you say its like learning a foreign language. I am glad I'm not the only one finding it tough. Good luck!

    Hi Lucy

Hope you are well, glad I am not the only one struggling with unit 6. Like yourself I have taken on a lot of extra responsibilities recently, on top of moving house and having 3 kids!!!

Nice of you to remember me, thanks for that!!

Suppose it's just a case of doing what we can, and hoping for the best, still very reluctant to pick up the books though. Had told myself I must study ECR tonight, and had actually got in the mind frame to attempt it, but just realised hubby has gone work and all of my books are in the car!! - really they are!!

So, should I take it as a sign that I'm not destined to take the exam???

Take care, and all the best with your studies.

    Tracy :)

    Re:ECR Exam - June

I hated ECR. I was irrelevant it didn't make sense and our teacher at college was boring.

What worked for me was going to a revision day run by a man called Sandy Hood.
He managed to make it interesting and the bits that didn't make sense did.

I prefered cleaning to college work (and I'm not a house proud sort of person) but after the revision day I didn't mind going through the exam papers and practising them. Sometimes you just need a kick start.

    Hi Columbia
I am finding ECR boring and your situation is practically a carbon copy of me, except the moving house part, we are in process of extending. Anyway just to say that I have purchased AAT books via the WH Smith website, I find them very helpful, just used the revision companion for unit 5 for recent devolved assessment. The books have skills tests and simulations with answers. At the moment I am looking for a book that contains the various formulaes needed for the unit, cos, like you I find these hard to remember.

    Re:ECR Exam - June

    hello all,

i must admit that i too am finding ecr difficult and very boring. I can barley get myself motivated to get to class as i am really fed up with it and the tutor expects you to know what she is going on about right from the start of a new topic and woe betide anyone that has to ask a question, which makes you feel like you cant go on with the topic, anyhow i have missed three lessons which i am now bitterly regretting and i can not bring myself to start revising, however with june just around the corner and not wanting to give up i suppose i must plod on, i am just glad that am not the only one who feels this way about this unit, but i am sure that we will all make it!!!

    Re:ECR Exam - June

    Thanks Yvonne

I'll have a look at the WHSmith site and see what it has to offer.

To be honest I feel loathe to continue studying management accounts at the moment. (Ekky I feel just like you do). I'm a mature student and recently I went self-employed. With time restrictions difficult due to work and having the children I keep asking myself whether or not to just pass all the financial units and keep up-to-date with government legislations etc. This way I will be able to offer my clients the service they pay me for and I won't feel as if I'm wasting valuable time learning a subject I don't enjoy, and feel as if I will never use as my clients are mainly small sole traders.

I'm having a real tough time deciding what to do at the moment, hence making any excuse not to study ECR. It's a never ending circle at the moment.

Glad I am not the only one struggling with this unit, it's just a shame we cannot be offered the choice of studying management or financial accounts, then I wouldn't be having this dilemma at all!

Anyhow enough moaning from me! hope you all have a good weekend, and I'll spend it sorting my life out!!

    Take care

    Tracy

After reading Jessica's message on this thread, I have made contact with Sandy Hood and he is looking into maybe doing an ECR revision day if there is enough interest.

    Re:ECR Exam - June

    Thanks mate,

My problem is that I have a total mental block on the whole management accounts subject, and however hard I try I just don't seem able to take any of it in!

I have spoken to my tutors and my family, and I have made a decision. I love financial accounting, and currently work as a self-employed book-keeper. As a female in her mid thirties with 3 young children, I really do not feel that the workforce will be able to offer me a position that pays well and can be flexible to my needs (ie school hours etc).

So the decision I have made is to sit FRA, study Personal & Business Tax, attend relevant Inland Revenue courses, and do a Book-Keeping Diploma instead.

I realise some people may find this a cop-out, but it covers all my needs, and will allow me to still have a recognised qualification with a professional board, and I will still be learning so able to provide my clients with the service they require.

I would like to thank you for your kind offer of emailing information to me, but as I have now made the decision above, I don't think I will be needing it!! It's nice to know that there are others willing to help out though, so cheers!! And all the very best with your studies.

    Take care all.

    Hey Trace.
how you doing? I see you have decided on what path you are going to go down, good for you! I don't mind admitting I love Management Accounting and have spent the last 15 years doing it, good job we are not all the same or else there would be no jobs for us. I struggled big time with Foundation and hated every minute and couldn't see the point in it as far as my job was concerned but hey ho.
    Keep in touch
    Cheers

Sandy Hood has put a thread about ECR on revision course forum, if enough people are interested he may well do a one day revision course.

    Sue
    Email me with
where you would like the course and
how far you would be prepared to travel
whether you are looking for skills test exam or both revision
(I think that should be enough)
Would Croydon be convenient for you?

I can file emails and try to decide where the areas are with the most enquiries. That suits me better than if you reply on the forums

Glad I'm not the only one hating this Unit. I'm worried I haven't learnt anything or won't be able to remember stuff. Hoping Overheads & Absorption Costing/Marginal Costing & Absorption Costing don't feature too heavily in the exam. Cause it wasn't my strong point in school - and certainly isn't now!

I am on your side honest!! I also envy you that you are actually doing some of this in "real life", I am a bit worried that I may get qualified and not put any of it into practice!!!
Anyway, the exam is looming..... I best get some revising in!!!

    Re:ECR Exam - June

    Hi everyone!

I cannot begin to tell you all how good it felt when i passed my ECR exam. It was my second attempt at it but i kept at it as i was going to get my bloody AAT certificate if it killed me.

I must admit i didn't put enough time into revising the exam the first time round as i really hated the unit. The second time round all i did was go over past exam papers over and over again until i got them stuck in my head.

When i came to sit the exam the second time round, i was so thrilled to see that the Dec 05 paper was virtually the same as June 05 paper (which i failed). So i'm just here to say that you can do it, but unfortunatley you have to work hard. Theres only 5 more weeks to go so give it your best then at least you won't be dreading the results in August.

And once you have the formulas etc in your head it will be so easier to learn. So fingers crossed for you all and the best of luck!!!
