I have completed AAT technician and currently have a job where i run the general accounts on a day to day business. For now this is fine however i am thinking within the next year or so to start a family and am thinking of working part time for the company i work for and maybe doing some part time book keeping for local self employed people in the evenings for extra money.
It daunts me as to where to start... any advice would be appreciated...
I have read through alot of pages on here and there is a lot of good advice, i am looking to do the AAT payroll in September so that i can also offer payroll services.

I started doing self-employed work a few years ago and the most difficult thing is deciding how to charge out your services. Most small businesses seem to resent having to pay for something which (in their view) doesn't contribute to their success.
You could try contacting local small accountants - they might need someone for their clients.
It is a big step, but it would offer you great flexibility.
    Good luck! 8)

Difficult of course. When I started doing book-keeping part-time I charged £15 per hour and no-one complained. I do feel that you need to charge individually to a certain extent. If a person brings you a well organised file to enter on a spreadsheet, you can charge a set fee each week/month, but if they bring you a box or carrier bag every now and again, then charge a higher fee or an hourly rate.
    Hope that helps.

I started my own business just under 3 years ago. I felt the same so I started with the free local help that was available Business Eye/Venture Wales. They gave me 3 years free help and advice on how to set up my business and be successful. I was introduced to a local business advisor who referred many clients to me who were new start up businesses. I was included in their local directory as someone they recommended. Without this help I don't think I would have made it. As it is, I'm really busy with 2 part time staff and my own office now. See what they can offer you in your local area.
