'Optional units'

edited June 18 in AAT student discussion
My college intends to teach the Personal Tax and Business Tax modules, which I am actually quite interested in. However, I am also interested in the CIPFA fast-track, which requires the Implementing Audit Procedures and Cash Management modules. My question is: Does anyone know if it is permissable* to do all four of the "choose two from this four" units?

Graham

*I'll think about whether it is "sensible" or "a good idea" later!

    Hi Graham

I would suggest sending an email to student services and see what they say - then at least you will have a definitive answer - and then you can decide whether it is indeed sensible or not - I think you might find that 2 tax exams is quite enough to learn withou auditing and cash management as well!!!!! :?

There is no reason you can't do 4, I did 3 with no problems from the AAT.

    Hi all.

Don't you have to do unit 8 or 9 as compulsory?

    Hi

I'm interested in doing the 4 units as well, only thing is my college does 2 evenings a week, and I don't know if they will give the option to choose more options, - depending on the popularity of the options and slotting these around the core topics.

Do you think some of the elements - like cash management and auditing would be feasible to study at home, and business tax and personal tax on the college evenings?

I am so confused at the moment re these options and am unsure as to the best direction to work towards - CIMA or ACCA?

Can anyone give me some advice/experience on these?

One of the tutors has already said they consider me an ideal candidate for ACCA, whilst I always thought costing was my strong point, as people at work consider that I will go on to CIMA. I just don't know!!!

There are no reasons why all 4 options cannot be studied, be I would think about whether or not you have enough time and commitment to study all 4 as well as the core papers and complete the project. It is not impossible but a lot of work.

Ruby - it is possible to do the audit and cash manangement options at home. But as they are simulation based you may need to either ask at your college whether they will let you sit the sims there or you may want to study via a home study course.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Ruby,

I am a home study student and took Personal Tax and the Cash Management units and found them both perfectly possible to study at home and I just an 'average' student - not especially clever or keen!

Best of luck with whatever you decide,

    Thanks Angelic

I am more nervous about this decision than the exam! My stomach is all in knots - what if I choose completely the wrong way - the wrong options, and it all goes Pete Tong???????

Think this decision is going to drive me insane

I can't even make my mind up over an indian restaurant menu, let alone this !!! Tikka masala or rhogan josh, or balti or, or ??? What's everyone else having - I'll have what they're having !!

    Re:'Optional units'

I'm in much the same boat. Our college runs the cash management and audit courses in the evening and the tax courses during the day. I can't do the day classes but the college will support anyone who wants to do tax without attending the classes (hell they want our money!!).

Now, I'm thinking of doing the the two evening courses (becuase I can) and tending towards doing Business Tax as well with half a mind to try all four.

Arrggghhh, I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure.

I could really go a curry right now too :)
