I'm searching for the best value payroll software and immediately looked at sage as i've used it whilst employed, the cost is phenominal £1500 including vat for 20 companies on bureau.
I've heard a bit about moneysoft and have just got the trial version but it seems too good to be true.
Anyone using Moneysoft Payroll ? or can anyone recommend a good Payroll software that I can use for online filing too? :?:

I have used IRIS-Payemaster until this year when I joined the Sage Accountant's club. This can include Sage Payroll bureau. For £500 you get the latest Line 50 Financial controller, Payroll bureau, complete support. On balance I found Sage to be the better programme.

    Hi,

If Quickbooks Payroll is anything to go by their Accounting Package it fantastic to use. When I started my new job last July and found and that they used Quickbooks, I didn't think I would get the hang of it, but personally I think that it is loads better than SAGE and the layout is a lot better as well.
I am currently trying to persuade my boss to use Quickbooks rather than SAGE for Payroll as well.

Why not use the employers cd rom issued by the revenue and develop your own system using excel

    Re:Payroll software

Although I prefer SAGE, I have purchased quickbooks plus payroll as it works out unbelievably cheaper! Up to 99 companies can be set up and I paid a mere £160! Compared to the hundreds it would cost with SAGE I think this is the best option.

Mind you, I have not used the Quickbooks payroll yet, so cant comment on the performance!! :D

    Re:Payroll software

I use quickbooks with the integrated payroll and it is really fantastic. much easier to use, much easier to make amendments and create reports than sage (although to be fair I've not had very much experience with sage, I just find it frustrating after using QB)
if you're doing accounts as well it's very handy having payroll linked in.

edited to say that I filed all my P35s online with QB and had no problems with it at all

    Re:Payroll software

Sorry to but in but I prefer Sage to Quickbooks although being fair may use of quickbooks for payroll and accounts is limited and I have the opposite problem to Jodie. I do have a client who uses both and he reckons they are better than Sage.

Sage is more expensive but you can get loads of discount if you are a member of the accountants club.

Edpersh where did you get your quickbooks from? I have not seen it that cheap anywhere!!

    Thanks Edwina

I will look at that and pass it on to my client who uses it as they wanted updates and couldn't find any where which did it cheaper. :D

try this - I was recommended it as an alternative to Sage - incredibly easy to use and from memory was £99 + VAT for 100 employees in multiple companies. Really friendly helpful people. Have a look at their website, and you can download a month's trial version.

    Hi

I use Superpay at work and find it very user friendly, and it is also quite cheap. I have installed this software for a couple of clients too, and they have picked it up straight away. Superpay also produce a online filing module for Year End Returns, at no extra cost. This too is easy to use. I used it to send almost 80 returns.

Take a look at their website: www.superpay.co.uk, where you can download a free trail version.

I tried Superpay, but couldnt get to grips with it being a DOS based programme - I kept hitting tab to move between fields rather than return - so gave up using it, but was impressed with how it worked though - just not for me!!

    Re:Payroll software

I had an encounter with QB payroll recently. I don't doubt that it's easy to use, and it produces professional looking payslips. It works fine, while things are going smoothly.
Where QB falls down is that it doesn't allow for human error. If the payroll is integreted to the accounts, you are compelled to print a cheque to finalise the pay run. If you don't, it doesn't record the payroll calculations. This cheque is then posted to the bank account and you don't see any increase and subsequent decrease in liability on the PAYroll liabilities account. This is fine if the employer writes out a cheque for the correct net pay and PAYE. If he doesn't, you can't change it without undoing all the payroll calcs. In short, you can't record a liability for one amount and a net pay cheque for another. Nightmare!
Or can someone tell me how to deal with this?

Not really up on QB, but could you not put a journal through to account for the differences?

The only way to deal with this is through a journal entry.

I was given this link a few days ago:

    www.Payroo.Com

It's completely FREE payroll for under 50 employees. I haven't had chance to research it fully but they are linked into HMRC for P35 submission so I assume they must be OK.

    Re:Payroll software

    Hello
I don't know which version of quickbooks you're using, but I use the accountant 2005 version, and what I do when the cheque generated isn't the same as what the client's written I just add a line onto the cheque for the difference and post it to the suspense account. Or, I get a screen up before teh cheque's generated which lets me tick which liabilities I want to pay for the period - after I've ticked teh right ones I can amend the actual amounts paid in teh far right hand column before generating the cheque.
I think I must be using a different version though, because I definately don't have to issue the liabilities cheque at the end of every payrun - what would you then do for clients who only pay their liabilities quarterly?! That sounds like a glitch in the system that's since been fixed to me.

If you're still stuck you could try posting a message here: www.quickbooksusers.com

Thanks everyone for your advice :D .
I decided to go with sage after all and joined the Accountants Club, they gave me a great deal on multi company line 50 client manager too so I'm able to interact with my clients software. Brilliant and not as expensive as i thought.
