I sat the exam yesterday and for some reason I couldn't get my trial balance to balance - does anyone know if this would result in a definite fail??

Re:Exam problems
Did you put in a suspense account to make it balance? If you did then you're fine because you showing that you know what you're doing even though it doesn't balance.0 -
Re:Exam problems
I thought about putting it to suspense to get it to balance but decided aginst it as it wouldn't of hidden the fact that I made a mistake somewhere. I wished I did now though!0 -
Re:Exam problems
You will get marks for it as long as you followed most of it through correctly and got things on the right sides! You'll be ok!!0 -
Re:Exam problems
I couldn't get mine trial balance to balance either - filled with doom.....
our tutor told us that it would be the opposite of last years paper so i've been revising Purchases all weekend and then it was sales... out tutor is so bad i can't begin to tell you.
lets hope my portfolio is good!0 -
Re:Exam problems
I now realise where I went wrong,I put the bank balance as a debit rather than a credit balance.
Seems a bit unfair of your tutor to state the exam content without being 100% sure.
I hope for us all that the examiner cut us some slack so we can progress onto the next stage.
Fingers crossed..0 -
Re:Exam problems
one of the girls from my class mentioned that to me too....so i guess thats where i went wrong.
was a 24k out..... so may be i had other mistakes too.......
Oh well just have to hope for the best....
i panicked a bit when i couldn't balance it - but hopefully i got the rest ok....i think i did anyway... i thought the trial balance would be the easy bit! not the other way round!!

Re:Exam problems
dont suppose you know about starting the next level in sept...
can you start if you failed the exam ??? or do you have to wait until the following sept??
hope not....0 -
Re:Exam problems
I'm not sure if you are able to move onto the next level without passing the PLB exam - someone out there will probably let us know.0 -
Re:Exam problems
I'm sure they will!
anyway we'll just have to wait and see....
our tutor told us we needed to get 100%
she's useless.....
i can't do another year with her!! my god doesn't bare thinking about!!!!
good luck with it all anyway.....0 -
Re:Exam problems
It's funny how we are all somehow told different pass levels - I understood it to be 80% but looking at the other discussions I'm not sure that their is an exact figure.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and I hope that we have passed despite our little error!0 -
Re:Exam problems
hummmmm
well see
good luck to you too!0 -
Re:Exam problems

I couldn't get mine to balance either - I've done nothing but practise trial balances for weeks now and got them (so I thought) absolutely fine, sat in there yesterday and just could not for the life of me see what I'd done wrong. I was so frustrated I burst into tears (not like me at all) when I got out of there. Spoke to my boss this morning and she reckons that as long as the workings and other parts were ok, I should pass, but I'm gearing myself up for retaking it in December. Too late to worry now, I'm concentrating on finishing off the last few bits of my portfolio and going to make the most of the summer!!0 -
Re:Exam problems
I asked my tutor about starting Intermediate, she said that you can still enrol onto the next level and resit the exam in december if (god forbid) you didnt do so well in the exam. Might be different for other colleges?
Hope this helps

Re:Exam problems
ah bless you - i felt like that too tho.... i just stopped looking for it - wanted to start it again but couldn't really tippex the whole lot out!!!
i was crying out side too...like a fool.....
I'm sure it'll be fine....the balance is only one question after all....
I'm just concerned about starting the next level - i don't want to have to wait until sept 07 to start the next level....

Re:Exam problems
it certainly makes me feel better - think i'd throw my self under a bus if i had to miss a year or god forbid spend another year with the woman thats teaching us now!!!! thanks0 -
Re:Exam problems
:?
I'm 99% sure that it's ok to enroll for intermediate even if you flunked the exam (like me) as I know when I contacted the college about foundation, I could have bypassed that if I was ok on double entry anyway.
Is it worth dropping an email to AAT to find out for sure? I might do if I get chance today - watch this space

Re:Exam problems
You can start the next level just resit! i didnt have any trouble with the trial balance except put the bank on the wrong side but realised straight away, so was well chuffed!
it was the journals etc, and those questions in the second section that i really struggled on. i cant believe there wans not a journal on bad debts. i know that off by heart!

Re:Exam problems
Harriet
I was about 24K out on my initial trial balance too. I was very confused as couldn't find the figure, then I didvided the figure by 2 and figured it was the bank balance!! I put it on debit originally and should have been credit. When I moved it then it balanced!
Re the pass mark
I have been told that there is no definite pass mark - it is all about being competant or not competant0 -
Re:Exam problems
wish i'd found it too.....
aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhh
oh well...... hopefully it was only that question i got wrong...trying to look on the bright side .... i'll speak to the course tutor tonight and see what the score is with starting in sept - thats my main concern.
thanks x0 -
Re:Exam problems

Tell me about it! One of our tutors has got to be a close contender for Worst in UK!! Her lessons usually consist of her turning up late, disappearing for half an hour at a time, being unable to help as she didn't even know how to use Sage when we sat the skills test on computers (we didnt even have any lessons on that one), only giving us one lesson on supplying info for management doodah, losing work she should have marked and keeping portfolios for weeks on end without even looking at them! Thankfully she's leaving to go move down south at the end of this term!!0 -
Re:Exam problems
I think it should be fine, i was 30k out, a little worrying, but I think I should have passed.
Here's something to encourage you, a friend of mine had a friend who did the PLB and was 100k out with his TB, but he still passed, so.... don't worry0 -
Re:Exam problems
that is very encouraging thanks.....

Re:Exam problems

Hey Andrew, thanks for that. I was about รยฃ30k out too! Speaking to others in class last night, they all seemed to know of people who'd passed even though it didn't balance. So I'm just going to wait and see, it's good to know I'm not alone though!
What annoyed me was that I flew through most of the rest of it, even the bank rec which for some bizarre reason took me ages to get my head round before. the only other thing I'm worrying about is the journals, as I was so stressed about the trial balance I wasn't concentrating so there may be some crazy entries there!
And to think this is foundation level....I'm gonna be GREY by the third year...if I get that far!!!0 -
Re:Exam problems
we'll lets hope we're all fine.
i was about 24 K out.... and i know what you mean about the rest of the exam ... i was stressing about the TB not balancing - but seemed to sail throught the rest....which was a bit weired....
oh well.....
anyway lets keep our chins up.... and fingers crossed!

Re:Exam problems
Can anyone give me their opinions on a couple of questions that have been bugging me since the IAC exam yesterday!
The first one was in the first section and dealt with the entries into the main ledger from the banc/cash a/c. The question didn't state to not deal with VAT on the expenses so I included it...was I wrong??!?
the second one was in the second sectionand was the employees wage slip. What was the employees net wage...the gross just less NICx2 and PAYE or the gross less NICx2, PAYE and The employee loan!?!?
Please help, as it's really bothering me!!0 -
Re:Exam problems
Are you talkin bout the same exam chuk? i hope so! :?0 -
Re:Exam problems
IAC is introductory accounting on the Diploma pathway! Although looking at some of the PLB comments there are a lot of questions the same!0 -
Re:Exam problems
Just a word of advice from someone who gained MAAT last year. Don't stress too much about not balancing TB as long as you show all your workings you're still in with a chance. I was absolutely convinced I had failed the Intermediate Finance paper because I like many others didn't balance. Guess what all my friends myself included all passed. It's not worth worrying over for 2 months. The result can often be better than you think. The important thing is to show all your workings, then if you make a small error the examiner can see where you're gone wrong. I spent many a week worrying about exam results only to pass every one first time. So chill out, open a bottle of wine (or three) and enjoy the summer break!0
