    Re:Association Of Taxation Technicians

I have put off applying to do it because they are just about to change the syllabus. From what other people have said (ages) before on these forums it is like AAT but a lot more in depth.

Krispi - are you a self employed MIP?? If so then ATT is about the only other qualification that you can do without having supervised work experience.

I dont know whether there are any implications of being a MIP and a student ATT in the same way there is with ACCA.

Sorry - didnt really answer your question at all!!

    Hi Claudia,

Yes the syllabus structure has changed to a more modular structure for those taking exams from May 2007. You can apply now under the new syllabus hence my post.
As far as I am aware there aren't any implications if you work for yourself the only thing is you need a suitably qualified person to confirm your eligablity for the course. However I have emailed ATT and I am waiting for a response on that one.

    Thanks anyway

    Re:Association Of Taxation Technicians

I have recently been accepted as a student by ATT and am doing the Tolley's Correspondence Course.

I have only been doing the personal tax so far (and I'm on the old 2006 syllabus so I'm only doing the two tax courses that I cannot get exemption from with a view to doing two other topics in 2007).

I would say it is much more in depth than AAT or CIMA (but my experience of both was back in the late 80's and early 90's).

I did study the CIOT final year in about 1997 but found the syllabus too wide and in depth for me to hope to pass the exams when I wasn't doing any tax so never took the exams. The ATT was a good stepping stone then and I am guessing it still is - the two associations will allow you to carry over any unused student membership from ATT to CIOT.

With regards to suitably qualified persons, my first was my HR Manager and my second was a previous employer who is ACA.

    Hope this helps.

    Re:Association Of Taxation Technicians

    Thanks TLG

    Yes that has helped.
I do quite a bit of tax work both personal and business tax and although I took personal tax at AAT level feel I should know more and I would like to learn more about business tax, capital gains tax and IHT. I only know what I have picked up from the accountant I do sub-contract work for.

I will look at the Tolleys course and see what that is like, so far I have only looked at BPP.

    regards
    Michelle

The Tolley's Correspondence Course has some excellent CD's giving an on screen presentation of each lesson that helps to make it feel more like a college lesson and less hard work just reading through the information.

Thanks this may be a good option for me. I agree reading is hardwork when done on it's own. I am a big fan of interactive courses.

    Re:Association Of Taxation Technicians

When I last thought about doing ATT there were exemptions for having passed AAT - having just looked again at their website these seem to have vanished unless you have a law O'level - sorry GCSE - guess I am showing my age here! Does anyone know whether there are still any exemptions for us? I think it used to be for accounting part 1 and something else part 1.

    Re:Association Of Taxation Technicians

The exemptions used to be for the law and accounting exams which are being phased out at the end of this year. Any exemptions will become invalid at the end of 2006 - there will be no credit given for exemptions, only for actual passes. I wasn't aware they were no longer available for AAT (when I last looked, they still applied for me with my CIMA qualification).

By the way, the two tax exams have always been linked and you were unable to pass one without passing the other (although if you got a certain mark, I believe you were allowed a re-sit of one and able to have a pass for both if you passed on the re-sit). As the new syllabus comes in to effect in 2007, the ATT are allowing separate credits for this year's tax exam results so a pass in one only will count as a pass for the relevant one of the four exam options in 2007.

If you want to look in to it further, here's a link to their website: http://www.tolleytraining.co.uk/

(Just been asked by someone else for it so thought I'd post it on here in case anyone else was struggling)

    Re:Association Of Taxation Technicians

Thanks TLG for the web link I was struggling to find it - could only get my search engine to come up with the store & online catalogue.
When I looked at the website last Friday I came across a bit that said there were still exemptions available for qualifications other than those listed but you have to contact them as exemptions are considered on an individual basis, so I have emailed ATT regarding exemptions as I thought I might get exempt from the accounting paper having completed AAT. Thyey haven't got back to me as yet, so I thought I would give them til the end of the week to reply before I ring them.
I want to get my application in quite soon as many course providers advise you to wait for your membership before starting their courses.

    Re:Association Of Taxation Technicians

I did the ATT in November 2002, I was lucky enough that my employer at the time paid for it all so I did attend the classes & revision courses and did it through FTC who were very very good. (which I could never have afforded if I was paying myself!).

I just wanted to say that it was a very good course, and covers practiacally every angle of tax in plenty detail. I know you now have options as to which modules you do, but I found the whole lot really useful. Obviously there's things that I learned that I've not used in practice (yet!) but it's good to know the rules so that you're aware of various situations that clients may well end up in, and which ones you'd be able to deal with (and which ones would be best to pass on to someone else).

What I remember finding useful (which I hope hasn't been lost too much under the new structure) was learning about how the taxes inter-act. For example you'd get a question like: 'a wealthy man is considering gifting his house & business to his son, discuss the CGT and IHT implications and what reliefs they would be entitled to.' It's things like that that come up in 'real life'.

Having said that it is tax after all, so there's no getting away from the bordom of all that work that you have to put in! I don't envy you...

    good luck with it

    Thanks Jodie

I have decided to enrol on the course and start it with a view to taking my exams in May 2007.

I am either going to do the course with Tolley, BPP or FTC - Haven't decided yet.

    Hi Krispi

I am currently studying AAT and ATT. I have found the ATT course very useful, and it has helped me a lot with my day to day work.
I am studying with Tolley, via their correspondence course. This requires a lot of work and commitment, but it is worth it.
From my experience, you may be better giving the ATT a call, rather than waiting for an e-mail reply.

    Good luck with your studies.

    Thanks Twd

I got a reply really quickly from them. They confirmed I won't get any exemption with the syllabus change as I won't be able to take any exams before May 07.

I am sending off the application as soon as I have my referree forms back and then I will enrol with Tolley for their distance learning course.

    Re:Association Of Taxation Technicians

I done the ATT course 2/3 years ago. It was extremely hard-going when continuing with normal workload. I found it very useful, but when it came to the exams I did not have time to revise properly and only passed the personal tax side and not the business tax side, hence I failed. Useful, but difficult.

With the change from sitting all the exams in one go to a modular structure will make studying much easier.
I have looked at the new syllabus and although there is a lot to cover I think it will be straight forward. I plan to sit personal tax and business tax in May 07 and proffesional ethics and one of the other modules in Nov 07.
