PCR - Limiting Factors

There appears to be some confusion over the limiting factors element of the PCR paper yesterday.
It seems that people have eithher got a shortage of 320 hours for the additional production, OR only 30 hours available for the additional production.
Presumably, if enough people have answered with both sets of answers, the AAT would need to consider whether they've worded their questions sufficiently and both sets of answers should be allowed? :?

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
I think either way you should pick up sufficient marks for knowledge and understanding.0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
I noted that there was a shortfall of 320 hours and that 350 extra hours were required. (Additional required, less shortfall = 30 hours for extra production).
What I didnt understand though was were we supposed to work out contribution per unit of limiting factor to work out weather it was more viable to have used those suplus 30 hours to make the Sigma or the other? (cant remember what it was called now!)
If we were supposed to I didnt so revised the budget just making extra Sigmas :?0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
I think that's what threw me - it didn't ask us to work out the contribution per unit and therefore which product was worth making with the hours available - to be fair, in only 30 hours, you'd have a job to make much of anything!
Loolabub - it seems that the 320 hours and the 30 hours were calculated the same way, it's just that we said only 30 hours were available and others said that there was a deficit of 320 hours! PHEW!!

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
I have never used the forum before but I'm glad I decided to. I feel so much better knowing that other people read the question how I did

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
hmmmm..i got a completely different answer.
I found no shortages in either labour or material!!
There was enough of both and as it never said which product had to be produced, i thought it was a trick question with no restrictions!! Please tell me someone else did the same thing, i thought the exam went well, but am panicking now!!0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
i didnt get any shortages either, and neither did the majority of the college so dont worry about it
it depends on how you read the question. dont worry, as long as your calculations for how many hours, kg etc are there then you will still pick up marks and i cant see it as a reason for failing.

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
Ppphheeewwww!!!! Just start going into panic mode i did!!!
I took quite a long time on that question to work things out and then thought AAT were being cheeky with this trick question.
And what made that more clear is because in limiting factors of two products it normally says the product 'x's' has to be met, and the rest of labour and material is used to make product 'y', but they didnt give that in this question, and so I came to the conlusion it was a trick question. I didnt get a chance to speak to anyone at college.
In section 2, did everyone get the end variance figure as 784 (F)?0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
to be honest i got to the end of that question, thought "hang on a minute that cant be right" so i completed the rest of the paper and went back to it
i couldnt see how it could not work, so i thought "blow this, im just gonna put that you can do it both ways"!
As long as your workings are there you should be fine

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
I think MichelleAAT is right, depends how you read the question, i found a labour restriction myself, a few other people from my class found this also, then you come on here and its all over the place!

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
Thanks Michelle, making me feel a little more relieved now. Would be interesting to see what the answer is and pass rate, as everyone seems split on this question and no majority.

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
No worries, i am sure we will all be fine.
The AAT scan through these forums on a regular basis, so hopefully we have "kicked up enough of a fuss" for the answers to be looked on leniently.

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
I don't know how you managed to conclude that there was enough labour and material....There was plenty of material available, but there was definitely a limiting factor, which was labour.
The only thing that I can think is that you didn't allow for sickness of 3 members of staff, which reduced your total available hours by 525 basis hours and 240 overtime hours = 765 hours.
Therefore, there were only 2,975 basic hours and 1,360 overtime hours = 4,335 total hours available for the original budgeted production AND the requested increase in production. The original production required 4,305 hours, meaning that only 30 hours were left for the additional production.
Where I splipped up was knowing how to prepare the revised production budget using this information,, as we were not asked to rank the two products by contribution or anything, to see which is most profitable... I just said that you could make x amount of one product or y amount of the other!!0 -

BBennett
I thought exactly along the same lines of thinking as you but Ive just realised - we couldnt work out contribution per unit of limiting factor as we didnt know the selling price of each product!0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
yes it has been pointed out where i went wrong on numerous occasions.
so perhaps you calculated incorrectly and was supposed to get NO limitations

Yeah, maybe...

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
I definitely get it as a labour limititation and my college tutor went through the answers with us afterwards and got the same thing, only 30 hours left! and we couldnt rank them for profitibility as we had no sales price....I therefore listed how many of each we could have made, think was 4 signums and 7 thetres! then produced a new production budget with the new amounts on , 9555 + 1400 and 11760 + 600 and had to explain how I could get there from my original available hours....0 -

I got exactly the same as you so hopefully we will be ok.0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
Yeah definately 30 hours were available!! And if someones college Tutor got 30 hours as well! Enough said!!!

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
Just wait till August now, hope I passed 2 out of the 4 that will make me happy! Although, suppose you shouldnt be happy with part failure!
Anyway not as nervous as I was last night with 15 mintes to go0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
I feel proper relieved now and will not stress until the early hours of 15th August!! :?
Don't want to have to come back in December - need to move on to ACCA!! :shock:0 -

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
i know what you mean
i want to move on to CIMA
0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
Im going on to CIMA too but not starting untill next September so maybe a fail in 1 will come in handy....keep me in some form of routine0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
It didn't ask you in the question which product to make. Part b was just to provide a revised production budget to include the extra units required.0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
i thought about having a break, but I get lazy..!
so ive decided to go onto CIMA (hoping task 1.2 doesnt fail me!!) and try and be ready in November for 2 exams, or at least a minimum one. It will keep me on my toes, but even then I think the gap between August/September and exam time in November is very short. But apparently people manage it all the time.
Even if i dont manage to be ready in time at least i should be able to sit 3 in the following May.

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
I know, but I did both, explained what could be made then went on to say this is the new production budget....:)0 -
Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
You see, I didn't understand that bit - what's the point in producing a production budget for units that you don't have the labour capacity to make?! :?
Seems a nonsense to me!

Re:PCR - Limiting Factors
You had to produce it then provide 2 ways of achieving it as such, thats how I made it out to be anyway??0
