Does anyone have any tips on dealing with pub accounts at all please? I have been asked to do some book-keeping / management accounts for a pub chain and am just wondering if there are any particular oddities to look out for as I havent dealt with this type of client before..well, not in a professional capacity!!!

    Re:Pub accounts

    Hi
My main employment is in a pub management company, so I have a couple of pointers to pass on.
The main areas are licenses and public entertainment license that you should be aware off, i.e a license is required for just playing a cd player in a public place.
Depending on the turnover, there are generally a lot of accruals and prepayments to account for.
Also gaming machines and jukeboxes can be classed as income and also as rental, i.e rental for machine and the revenue collected from machines.
It is quite a specialised area but is not difficult.
    Hope this helps.
    Sharon :)

    Re:Pub accounts

    Hello
One of my clients runs a pub. Luckily they're quite organised and orderly because I would imagine it would be a nightmare if they weren't. There's a lot of payments made with cash to save the bank charges on banking the money, for example most of the staff at this pub are paid cash. As I say, they do keep good records but the cash account never really balances at the end of the day!
The whole gaming machine/jukebox thing can get a bit tricky - if your client has this then make sure you understand what the deal is - some companies take their 'rental' money from the money in the machine and only hand the balance to the pub. You need to read the forms carefully as the VAT sitaution here can get tricky with VAT only being applied to certain elements of the transaction. Once you've got it sussed it's not that hard though, and some machines aren't complicated at all.
One more thing to check is whether the landlord lives at the pub - if so part of the rent/lease payments will need to go to drawings.

Sharon: Maybe you could help me with something I've been stuck on for months - this pub that I act for asked if I'd try get some figures from similar pubs to theirs, or average figures for the industry, to see whether they're getting ripped off in some areas or could be cutting back on some costs. I've not had any luck finding anything - would you know whether this type of information is avaliable?

    Thanks
    Jodie

    Re:Pub accounts

    Hi
Just to re-iterate what Jodie has mentioned about the vat on machines, I agree the vat is tricky but the machine companies are generally helpful and should be able to advise if you come unstuck.

    Jodie,
I'm not sure what the industry averages are but may be able to help you by giving you an idea etc depending on turnover/location/type of customers.
For example, some of our pubs are near premier football grounds and takings normally go through the roof when a home game is on.
The company I work for manage over 200 pubs and every pub is quite individual in it's trade.
Feel free to e-mail me at sgillett@sgillett.plus.com.

    Regards

I have replied to your e-mail but my service provider says 'connection refused'(reason for delay).
Not sure if it's my end or you.
I will send it again so fingers crossed.

I thought something funny was going on with my emails but that's the first confirmation that I've got - I thought everyone else was ignoring me!

Can you try reply to missthiss@gamil.com - I've not had any problems with that one.

    Thanks a million

    HI

I do the yearend accounts for a few pubs, but I was under the impression that managers/landlords lived on premises free as somebody needs to be there 24 hours a day. HMRC okayed this when I went on a course also

    Regards
