Hi
I was a completely taken aback  when I appeared for my unit 5 & 6 exams in june2006. I was 15 weeks pregnant and when I informed the examiner that I suffered from severe pregnancy sickness and may need to use the bathroom during exam, I was refused on the grounds that I should have informed the AAT before hand and that AAT would have arranged for me to have a seperate exam room. I was however, allowed to use the bin in the exam room; which was embarrasing.
I tried my best to complete as much of my paper as possible and left. At this point I am not sure if I will pass.
I was wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation. :?

Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
Hi,
I think thats terrible not being allowed to go to the toilet especially when you'd advised the tutor before the exam started!!
At the beginning of our exam my tutor informed us that if we needed to use the toilet during the exam if we raised our hands and said, then we'd be taken to the toilet and then brought back.
I would have said that your situation was the same!!

Hi
Being allowed out to use the toilet is allowed in most exams (CIMA at least).
Thats terrible on the part of the invigilator. Have you been in touch with the AAT?

Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
This is appalling. I'd be mad as hell and making formal complaints to anyone I could think of and probably having a word with a local newspaper too.
At best this person didn't understand the rules and at worst it verges on the downright sadistic.
Grrrr.

Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
I agree, its standard practice to raise your hand and be allowed to be accompained to the toilet... I sure as hell can't hold it for 3hrs and 15mins!!!!

Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
Mind you if you are going to be sick I'm not sure you would have time for an invigilator to make their way to you and escort you out.
I guess that might have been the problem - however it isn't very nice for other students taking an exam with someone being sick in a bin infront of them!
I think you did the right thing by walking out but you should complain as how did you know you would have to inform the AAT.

Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
When I took my second year exams at uni I was 5 months pregnant. I was allowed to go and throw up. I think you should complain to AAT.
There is no reason why you should not have been allowed to go.
It is disgraceful that you should have to be sick in front of other students.0 -
Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
Hi Farhana.
You need to make a complaint to the AAT student services. You have been treated quite badly and need to inform the correct people.
Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy.

Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
Are you sure you didnt misunderstand what the invigilators response to that was? All the invigilators for the exams I have been in have made it clear that we can use the bathroom at any time as long as we raise our hands and be accompanied by them. Maybe he/she went into a bit of a panic mode when faced with a pregnant student and was worried about causing a commotion for the other students?
Did you make a complaint about this to the AAT??0 -
Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
If they are going to panic and be insensitive to a students needs they shouldnt be doing that job anyway surely?0 -
Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
I'm shocked and apalled at the treatment you have received.
You should most definately take this to AAT Student Services.
What a load of rubbish that you should have informed the AAT beforehand, the exam entry form asks if you have any special requirements, but this is for dyslexia or such like, not pregnancy!!
the invigilator should have had the sense to put you at the back of the exam room (or as close to the exit door as possible!) so that you could run to the bathroom when necessary with the least amount of disturbance to the other students.
What did they think you would do, read up on depreciation while you're hurling your guts up!!!
Please let us know how you get on, and best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy

Re:Pregnant student not allowed out of exam room
obviously this invigilator doesn't know what pregnancy is like!! Very unsympathetic0
