    hi,
i'm going through the same thing, started foundation in sept '05 and thought i'd get a part time job in accounts but because i haven't got any experience (qualifications don't seem to count) no one wants to know.
doing voluntary work in an office (not accounts) at moment so i can at least get that kind of experience.

    Re:Career worries

Hi, I had the same problem, I have just completed AAT foundation, but have no accounts experience at all.
I applied for loads of jobs and got a few interviews but failed to get the job.
I spoke to my tutor about it and she recommended voluntary work, so I became treasurer of a nursery in my area, three months later I applied for an auditors position and hey presto I got the job, I have been there a while now and it is very enjoyable, they are going to support me through the next 2 years of college too.
Keep at it is my advice something will come up, try the voluntary option too because my new employer said that was what got me my job. Good luck to everyone searching for work. :D

your local paper under jobs should have a section for voluntary work, failing that you need to write to companies offering your services

    Hello,

    Re:Career worries

I found that the recruitment agencies were always looking for more qualified and experienced people.
You never know though something may come up with them.
I think with this line of work you just haveto keep looking and applying for any job that is relevent, one day you will be lucky, where i live there isnt many people with AAT qualifications about so I was fortunate in getting a job with just AAT foundation

    Re:Career worries

Im 37 and had worked in the automotive industry all my life mostly in shitty factorys, decided to take up accountancy so I enrolled on the AAT. After six weeks I phoned every accountant in the yellow pages and sent a CV to the the ones who asked for one. I got two days a week volantry work at a local accountants which the employment service supported.I did that for four months and I have just been offered a position at a top accountants practice in the city with the further option after the AAT to go on to Charted fully funded.

Agencies, Agencies, Agencies - register with any of them - they'll find you something to do with the area you specify. Afterall, they need to find you jobs to get paid themselves.
I was registered with one "am-recruitment" or something, in Manchester and after 3 days I was sat in the interview room - 4 days after I started as accounts junior. Still here after 2.5 years.

You do have to be careful with some agencies though. They get paid on commission so sometimes they will place you anywhere just to get the commission, even if the job isnt what you want.

Make sure they know exactly what you want and that you wont settle for anything which is less.

    Re:Career worries

I've had some right old expereriences with agencies over the years. Some of them just seem to match up keywords in your CV with keywords in the job description, no thought process involved at all. I've actually ended up in a job interview where neither the agency nor the employer appear to have read my CV at all. Ouch!

Then again some have been brilliant. By and large the bigger agencies have been OK, it's the smaller ones (two blokes annd a phone!) that have been rubbish.

    Re:Career worries

The job centre has various schemes avalible to help with training the main one being NEW DEAL.If you are unemployed and qualify for new deal you can then ring around all the accountants in your area and and explain the situation. I think the employment service pay so much of your wages for a period,ie six months which in most cases is enough experience to open doors for other vacancies. Go to your local emplyment service and ask or visit their website.

    Hello ammji

Have you got the yellow book? (telephone directory) go into the yellow book and ring companies that you are interested in working with and make enquiry about becoming a volunteer ( accountancy firms). 8)

Hi Im so glad I logged on and read everyones responses. Im currently unempolyed have been for three months. I have done my AAT Foundation and have been applying for loads of accounts jobs but to no avail. I have felt very down about this but reading about what everyone has said it has made me feel more positive. I now plan to take your advice and apply to as many accountants as I can and offer my services for free. Hopefully this will pay off and I will find a great job. :-o

You need to ring round accountants and offer your services for voluntary work. You could even compose a letter but please forgive me for being critical, get someone to spell check it for you. I am happy to help if you would like me too.

    Hello,

I apply for an account junior position who offers to pay for anyone willing to study AAT. Having got the experience, I was rejected, I got confused because I thought they were looking for someoneone with my criteria. They have advertised the job once again.
Does anybody knows what this means?

They may think you're over qualified if you've already got foundation AAT. They could have been looking more for an office junior.

You just need to keep trying. And I don't mean to sound harsh, but it would be worth getting someone to spell-check your letters and correspondance.

    Just keep at it :)

    Re:Career worries

I feel for every one who has had these sorts of problems. I must say however, (although this is no consolation) that this is not at all exclusive to the accounts world. Getting expereice without experience is a nightmare.

I, in a way feel, like a bit of a fraud in the accunts world. I 'did' retail for 4 years and decided it was not for me, so I tried to get an 'office' job. That in itself was a mountain, but climb it I did and after periods of JobCentre visits and dole collecting I got a few temp positions. One place I went to work at (to do data entry, essentially) I was offered a job. Until then I had not even considered accounts. I am still here 2 years later, doing management reporting, amongst other things. But, damn, I had to struggle to just get into an office.

Stick with it. Things do happen.

    Hello all

It came to a point where I don't want to look for accountancy job anymore. I kept questioning myself, have I choose the right subject? I mean how do employers expect everyone to get experience when they are'nt willing to give you a job just because you got the skills but not experience?

Is anyone going through the samething? What is your opinion? :?
