I am in the process of setting up as a self employed accountant and initially will be just offering Bookkeeping. Do I need to be purchasing software, I have had a look on the Sage website and there are so many versions I had no idea which one to look at. Please help!

Re:Software
Hi Suzanne
If you're planning to have a few clients you'll probably find it's best to have Sage Line 50 Client Manager. As well as being Multi Company if you have any clients that do most of the work themselves with you doing the more complicated transactions for them it works much better as you are both able to work on the books at the same time with an Accountants Link.
I can give you the contact details for the person I speak to at Sage if you want them, he's always very helpful when I contact him.

Re:Software
A considerably cheaper alternative to Sage is Quickbooks
quickbooks.intuit.com
and Dean who regularly graces us with his presence on these forums also has a wonder package where everything is done through the ether...

I have been thinking about buying Client Manager fpr some time, but i can really get a straight answer about what it actually does. I understand about the client/accountant link but I have several clients who don't want to buy their own software.
One bloke in the Accountants Club dept told me that I could run 25 companies on client mananger as if it was a multi company version. With a normal multi company version, you can open each company without backing up the previous one.
One of their tech support guys told me you have to back up the data for company A, and restore data for company B every time I want to work on a different client's data.
Can you tell me which one of these scenarios is true?
Also, as a bookkeeper, I want to send data files for individual companies tothe client's accountant. Can you do this with client manager?
Thank you if you can clear this up for me.

The bloke from the Accountants Club was correct. I run the version of Client Manager that you are talking about with 25 companies and can go from company to company without backing up and restoring. You can also send files for individual companies to Accountants. Also if a company has started their own bookkeeping and changed their mind you can create a new company and restore their books instead of using the Accountants link option.
I would suggest delaying buying it for a few weeks because they are about to release an updated version.
Sage also have a Demo CD, the copy I have is called Line 50 V12 Client Manager Product Tour, I haven't tried running it but I assume it would give you an idea of how it works.
I'll private message you with the contact details I have for Sage.

Re:Software
I have always had to buy individual licences to run my clients on my machine.
How does the Accountants Club work - and more importantly how much does it cost????

Re:Software
By becoming a member of the Accountant club you have a single company licence for Sage Line 50, payroll and ACT. You also become a reseller and can purchase Sage at discounted prices.
The Sage line 50 Client Manager which I think can be purchased without being a member of the Accountant club comes in different size packages. I think the smallest one is a 25 company licence. When I purchased it it was £500 plus VAT.
If you like I can give you the details of my contact at Sage who will be able to explain better.

Re:Software
Please Sue - my (dopey) contact has always tried to flog me one licence at a time at £150 each, so on that basis a one-off £500 sounds like a bargain.
