All I can tell you is that CIPFA is for public body empolyees. When I worked for the local council, they thought I was going to do CIPFA, but I thought no way, I'm staying here all my life!

thanks purplegirl, not sure how to take your reply tho, i,m one of the more mature student types and looking for abit of security, and thought by going for a council based position i would get a great career package ( pension, studing, good wage, etc )and i know the council will probably be here long after i have kicked the bucket!!!!!
i dont want to have to keep swapping jobs just to get further in my career, i have done that afew times already, and feel that this move has to be the right one that lasts.

I think that one of the biggest things about working for the council is can you cope with the bureaucracy? Yes it has the perks of security, reasonable wages and (if you are lucky! - but dont hold your breath) final salary pension scheme, but the bureaucracy which is what I suspect purplegirl is on about, is the crunch factor.

Right, let me tell you I found the work tedious (although I was in a semi-junior position, equal to Accounts Assistant by the time Single Status came in), the pay is rubbish, especially for qualified people and there is absolutely no job security. I went through 2 department changes whilst I was there in my 3 years and saw many people lose their jobs with 're-shuffles' and pay going down after Single Status. I am now in a much better position with better pay and I still get study support. I can join a pension scheme after 1 year, which is next month.

Just put single status into a search engine and what rubbish we went through!

This is of course all my own personal experience and I would never tell someone not to work for the council as I met loads of great people there. :D

I also worked for my local council for 3 years, I was a finance assistant and then progressed onto supervisor of the department. I thoroughly enjoyed my work and the people I worked with were great.

However working for a council does not equal job security. Many people lost their jobs or left due to reduced pay once single status was bought in and there are always departmental reviews taking place.

Also there is a lot of bureaucracy to cope with which can make the job extremely stressful at times and I found that there was little room for career progression, as people left their post would not necessarily be advertised but rather the post would no longer exist.

Although Cipfa is for public service and so some modules aimed at the public services, what you will find is that if you look at all the of the accounting courses there are modules which are almost identical.

Remember whatever route you take you can always get the other after by just doing a few exams.

What I will say about Cipfa is that they start there courses before AAT results are out and it is very difficult in certain parts of the country to follow the AAT Fast Track option - so it becomes a normal route option.

    Hope this is useful
