Calling all builders!

Does anyone work for a builder/developer?
I'm trying to source new software and would welcome feedback on the software you use.
It has to be specific to developers and deal with retentions, detailed job costings and stage payments.
CIS is also a factor - but that's a standard requirement.
Thank you!

Re:Calling all builders!
My husband's building company uses MYOB, which I believe is highly recommended for building companies, as it copes easily with all the requirement you mention. I can't comment from personal experience as I have never used it myself, but it has been mentioned recently on the MIP forum.

Re:Calling all builders!
Without going into details, what size business is your husband's? We're fairly big and develop small estates etc. How do they compare?
I've seen several packages for smaller firms, but they aren't really appropriate.
Many thanks.

Re:Calling all builders!
I am looking into it almost from the other side, one of our clients is a roofing company that roofs estates for builders and we are looking for some software that can combine invoicing and accounting and estimating to stop a lot of duplication of tasks, at the moment we are using sage, excel and typing invoices which seems ridiculous but a bespoke package would be out of our league.
If anyone has any other suggestions I would appreciate it.
I take it a bespoke package would be cost prohibitive too baggybooks?

Hi Baggybooks & bluewednesday
I work in construction and we use Access Dimensions software. This software is available at several levels - depending on the size of the business.
It provides you with a job costing structure within the accounting package. You can set stages for billing/cost review etc.
Of course - we are involved with CIS - this software enables that as well.
It also allows stock control as well - although I myself do not use this part of the software - but a colleague does.
It also cuts down data entry as it operates a Sales Order Procedure (SOP) and Purchase Order Procedure (POP), these allow orders to be placed on the system, which will push through to nominals with the minimum of further entry once the sales invoice can go out or the purchase invoice has been received. This also allows budgeted costs and revenue to be seen against each job, and also via the nominal accounts to calculate accrued revenue and costs for wip

Quite a busy software programme which allows you to have other add-ons: desktop executive and import/export facilities!
Hope this is of interest to you both, Ruby

Re:Calling all builders!
Many thanks. Our current package is being withdrawn and we have been offered something else, but at a price!
I need to see what else is available before I commit.
I've contacted MYOB this morning and they don't have anything suitable for this size of business.

Re:Calling all builders!
It would be worth looking at Construction News which details packages such as this. It can be accessed as newspaper or on the net.
Best of luck

Re:Calling all builders!
Thanks - I already receive it, but it's nice if you can substantiate the blurb with first-hand experience.

Re:Calling all builders!
Probably a stupid question, but have you contacted any builders who are of a similar size to you.

Re:Calling all builders!
Not a silly question. But yes, I am in touch with several.

Re:Calling all builders!
I work in a construction company that deals with hotel re-furb and dvelopments. Have you looked at SAGE contruct? Very good programme, dealing with all the things mentioned above I believe.0 -
Re:Calling all builders!
I know I'm going to start a riot, but this is the first time a 'user' has recommended Sage. I don't know anyone else that actually likes it!
I'm waiting for your calls...
